TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Must be willing to accept assignment throughout career anywhere in the U.S. and in DEA's foreign offices.

MAJOR DUTIES:
DUTIES: Special Agents conduct criminal investigations and prepare for the prosecution of major violators of the Controlled Substances Act. Typical duties include, but are not limited to: conducting complex criminal investigations; carrying out surveillance of criminals; infiltrating illicit drug channels; using undercover techniques; identifying and apprehending drug traffickers; executing search warrants; confiscating illegal drug supplies; arresting law violators engaged in criminal drug activities; working closely with and debriefing confidential sources of information; collecting and processing evidence; writing highly detailed technical reports; giving sworn testimony in court; developing evidence to seize financial assets gained from the proceeds of drug trafficking; establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with municipal, state, and other Federal law enforcement organizations. These duties are frequently hazardous. Special Agents carry firearms. Special Agents are required to work a considerable amount of overtime and are subject to irregular work hours.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience is typically in or related to the work of the position described. GS-7:Baccalaureate degree with overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.95 or above based on all courses completed or during the final two years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher, based on the average of all courses in the majorfield of study or based on all courses in the major field of study during the final two years; or baccalaureate degree plus one full academic year of graduate study; or one year of specialized law enforcement experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the federal service. GS-9: Graduate degree (or equivalent, such as LL.B. or J.D.), or two academic years of progressively higher level graduate education; or one year of specialized law enforcement experience equivalent to the GS-7 level of responsibility. GS-11: Appointments at this level are made from current or former Federal Criminal Investigators who have already served at the GS-1811-11 level or higher. (Appointments at this grade level will not be the result of a promotion.) GS-12: Appointments at this level are made from current or former Federal Criminal Investigators who have served at the GS-1811-12 level or higher and who have Federal narcotics investigation experience at that level. (Appointments at this level will not be the result of a promotion.) Note: Due to identified operational need, applicants majoring in Accounting orFinance may apply 90 days before receiving their degree if all otherqualification criteria are met.

BASIS OF RATING:
For CTAP and ICTAP, well-qualified means that the applicant is eligible, qualified, and clearly exceeds qualification requirements for the position as demonstated by either: (1) meeting selective and quality ranking factor levelsas specified by the agency; or (2) being rated above minimally qualified underthe agency's specific rating and ranking process. EVALUATION METHODOLOGY: In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, an applicant must also have additional law enforcement, professional, military, or administrative experience sufficient to be rated in the 'most competitive' category. Candidates will be given a preliminary evaluation based on education and experience and/or experience, education, and special skill (e.g. certified fluency in a foreign language, pilot's license, military officer). Additionalconsideration will also be given to those individuals who have degrees in special skill areas: Finance, Accounting, Economics, Foreign Language (with fluency verified) in Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Nigerian Dialects, Chineseor Japanese, Computer Science/Information Systems, Telecommunications/Electrical/Mechnanical Engineering, or Criminal Justice/Police Science or Related Disciplines. Persons who are rated 'most competitive' will process further to a two-part panel interview (written and oral assessment.) Successful completion of the interview phase will result ina medical evaluation, physical task test, urinalysis drug screening, polygraphexamination, psychological assessment, full-field background investigation andfinal hiring decision. Applicants must successfully complete each assessment phase in order to continue through the process.

PAY, BENEFITS, AND WORK SCHEDULE:
Irregular tour of duty to cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This position is covered by the Law Enforcement Retirement System, and the incumbent is eligible for Law Enforcement Availability Pay. This position is covered by the law enforcement officer retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 836 and 5 U.S.C. 8401 as primary. All Federal employees are required by PL 104-134 to have federal payments madeby Direct Deposit. This position will be filled on a full-time permanent basis. Upon completing any required probationary period, the position will be permanent.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Selectee must sign a mobility agreement to accept relocation to other geographic areas if required by the agency. The individual selected will be subject to random drug testing. Applicants must pass a pre-employment medical examination, drug screening, andbackground investigation. The selectee must be able to obtain and keep a Top Secret security clearance. Successful applicant(s) will be required to pass a background investigation and polygraph test prior to appointment. Occasional travel may be required. Incumbent will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and mustmaintain firearm proficiency. This position requires completion of a three year probationary period. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All candidates must be U.S. citizens between the ages of21 and 36; must be in excellent physical condition; must be able to obtain a DEA Top Secret security clearance; must have a current and valid driver's license, and must sign a mobility agreement stating their willingness to accept assignment anywhere within the United States or overseas.

Time in grade restrictions must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Promotion will depend upon administrative approval and the continuing need for an actual assignment and performance of higher level duties.
