Hi Guys, Does anyone have any helpful info about the US park rangers? Do they have their own academy, and I heard some are armed, and some are not (unarmed work more of a security position) Is this the case? Any info would be greatly appreicated.

DodgeRam,

Park Rangers have different jobs, but are all the same job series. It's kind of messed up, but thats how they have it. Most Park Ranger jobs are more of tour guide type jobs and are un-armed, the jobs that say Park Ranger Law Enforcement are armed jobs and have arrest powers and etc. They would go to FLETC (Federal Police Academy). Before you can get hired from the Park Rangers you have to usually have a series I Ranger Academy that you have to put yourself through. You can get that through UMASS Amherst and other places and its part time for about 3-4 months and costs about $2500.00, I hope this helps.

DODK911 is correct....all National Park Service Rangers have the same Federal job code (0025), but there are radically different positions. The "interpretation" rangers are the tour guides, while the "law enforcement" or "protection" rangers are the ones who are armed & have arrest powers.

LE rangers are usually stationed in national parks that are either really remote (Yellowstone), or too small to justify having the US Park Police stationed there (Charlestown Navy Yard).

Park Police are only in NY, DC, and SF. Park Rangers are everywhere else.

I went to the UMASS Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program many years ago. Getting on as a full-time, permanent status Park Ranger can be a long journey. There are so many people out there who want the job that the most common route is to go to the seasonal academy and alternate working as a seasonal in the north and the south with a short break between jobs. Eventually, the hope is to get picked up full time but you are always competing against other applicants who have tons of certifications, such as EMT, Paramedic, high angle rescue, swift water rescue, etc. There are several parks, know colloquially as "status parks," which hire people without a ton of experience and send them to FLETC to what used to be the Land Management Training Program. Off the top of my head, those parks are Boston, Philadelphia and St Louis. The status parks are generally not attractive to applicants because the are urban parks and most people want to be park rangers so they can work in more traditionally environments.

We work with a LE Park Ranger in Vermont. She is armed, has a K9, does snowmobile patrol, etc. Her vehicle is a marked Tahoe in a minty green color. She is the only person responsible for 700,000 acres; could be more or less. She likes her job from what she says. Once she is off of Federal Forest she won't do anything. She said that she technically can but the Federal Govt. wont back her if anything went wrong.

She is a U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer. For whatever reason, they don't call them rangers.

BLM and the Park Service have rangers.

National Park Service falls under the Department of the Interior.

Rumors right now are the US Park Police are lobbying to take over all of the Park Service Law Enforcement areas. Don't think it will ever happen due to the bottom line ($$$).

I am a US Park Ranger (LE) in Boston. If anyone has any specific questions just PM me.
