Just wondering how other agencies are dealing with this issue. Our particular department makes detentions for illegals as long as we get a detainer. We are also receiving praise from the border patrol for checking on people's status when they are not from here.

Now, one such case back in December a cop from MA called our department yelling at our chief about three illegals that I caught one night (must have been friends) stating that this was illegal to do when in fact it is not.

How do you all deal with the illegals?

Posted by: Gil

Cite em or arrest em and let the court take care of the INS issues. We called INS a while back for something and we where pretty much told that unless we had a bus load don't bother wasting their time....

I would think that Attleboro has a fair share of illegals and I have NEVER seen or heard of INS even visiting us in the past 9 years.

Most INS issues don't seem to get addressed at the police level. Generally, at the jail, INS comes up once a month and has a hearing with all these guys, and has them sign a bunch of paperwork. A week or so later, a bus will show up and take them off to their final destination, be it deportation or INS detention. Our facility doesn't do INS detention, but I know some of the other county facilities are holding INS detainees such as Suffolk and Franklin.

INS? Who's that? Springfield is loaded with illegals (I stop at least one a night) and we've been told by the INS field office that unless they committed murder, they don't care....

Posted by: Pinkos307

Gil, we had same response from INS about 6 months ago. Caught three guys down town and INS told us it was a waste of time to check on three of them.

Posted by: Burner1

It is the current Administrations policy is not to deal with them. Even when Clinton was in office it was the same. INS basically has standing orders not to do anything. I'm sure this might come up during the election campaign, but it won't change the current flow of illegals...too volatile.

Did anyone see the story concerning a high school teacher who is being deported because he read the expiration on his card wrong.

I believe it was written 6/7/03 (meaning June 7, 2003). This high school teacher thought it read 6 July, 2003. He was late for renewal.

INS will deport a productive member of society, how screwed up is that.

Pinkos why don't you apply for a job at I.C.E. (I.N.S.). Get in there boy and change things around!

We have our share of illegals here in central MA as well. One instance in particular, I had stopped a guy coming out of a bank because he was driving like an idiot. I soon found that he had a fake international drivers license and a fake MA temp. license under another name. By the end of booking, we had 6 different names and eight different DOB's for this guy. After faxing his prints off we then found his real identity and that he had already been deported once. With all of that, the bail clerk set a $10,000 bail which was paid in a matter of hours. . As long as the clerk got his $$$ he was good-to-go. Imagine everyone's suprise when he failed to show to court .

Go to any state college in Massachusetts and you can find a bus load. Dukakis administration in the 80s were giving fake Social Security numbers to illegal aliens so they could get drivers licenses and attend state colleges in go old Assachusetts.

Killjoy-have to read the rollcall board more often. Remember the item posted in December?

I dont know about the other parts of Mass but major strides have been made since pre 9/11 days with the old INS. We deal with the US Dept of Homeland Security Immigration Detention & Deportation Hartford, CT. I met with the Cheif Supervisory Agent who was great. He and his guys -all eight of them, are under direct mandate to go after these types (illegals, illegals who are agg. felons OR someone who is a resident alien but running up charges on their BOP like the National debt) In 4 months that office has worked with me on 3 cases-and they follow up, are very eager to work and the attitude is 360 degrees from before. As he put it to me "my guys are hungry".

Again, I dont know who you others might deal with but if its not the right "office" you might get the standard company answer. Also, the USDHS (former INS LESC in VT) is avail 24/7 by phone or LEAPS and has been for years. I have used them so often I have points of contact there.

The Federal govt has also filed a lawsuit in US District Court against a person/company for the manufacturing/selling of International driving ID's. We have a copy of the suit on our roll call board if anyone wants the details PM me and I will fax it to you.

Quite interesting, as we get our share through several businesses that employ them in town. Alls we have to do is call BP, confirm with them if they are illegal, and if so they will have a team to pick them up a few minutes later. Hasn't mattered if it was just one or more.

They should open up an office in Worcester, this place is polluted with em... No one here (including myself) knows who to call or what to do with one.. Usually we come in contact with one for 90/10 (love the International DL's off the internet) or domestics. They go to jail but they're back out and utilizing our services a week later.....

UPDATE:
I am getting the names & numbers for US Dept of Homeland Security, Immigration Deportation for the Boston area and Worcester area (if different). I will pass along same for those who want it via PM provided I confirm your agency/position.

I strongly advise to inform your Chiefs or supervisors that checking out these illegals is DEFINITELY WORTH THE MINIMAL EFFORT.

Case in point: On 4/15 I stopped a van with 5 of them, all admitted illegals no ID and driver with fake Guatemala license (van had TN plates-huge red flag). Simple unlicensed right? Checked van and found 2 citations for criminal complaint applications for same offenses in Jan & Mar this year from city police. I locked him up for 90-10. Routine booking with fingerprints. FBI kicks back arrest under alias in Georgia, with 4 more aliases. Mass kicks back 5 previous arrests for 90-10 & more NONE of which showed up on BOPP. Subject had total of 5 different names. I placed a call to Immigration. Check revealed a Deportation warrant held by Feds in Miami. Within 30 minutes he went from a 90-10 with bail of ROR to bail denied, federal detainer. Again, none of this would be possible without minimal effort & cooperation between agencies. This guy had been stopped, cited/arrested by 2 municipalities over past 3 years and no one bothered to follow the trail.

Nice...

Don't take this for solid info. But try calling the Federal Protective Service, they are under HLS now and they do assist in such things now. I'm not saying they will come out, but maybe they have a better chance dealing with ICE.

I am curious to know if any of you have come across "drop houses" for illegals. Out here in the Phoenix area we come across them once a week. Most of the time "ICE" ( Immigration, Custom's Enforcement) have come out and taken them from us.

Posted by: EOD1

I had to call INS for my SGT a few times and what they do is take the names and check to see if they are the watch list (foreign criminals, terrorist watch list etc etc) and other than that they said just to follow the dept. policies and book and release. they are a very overworked under funded and undermanned organization.

We stopped a van full of illegals the other night that were on there way to New England area to start a new wonderful life. YA Right. Now they are on their way back to Mexico, I expect they will be back in the country in a few days.

When I was in San Diego I was working loss prevention part time and we routinely arrested illegals for shoplifting and burglary. After signing the arrest forms and calling the local PD or Sheriffs, Border Patrol would always send a car or van to pick up the shitbirds right from the store and take them to INS detention, no problems at all. SD county does have a million illegals, many BP/INS officers, and several INS detention centers as well.

Good News Bad News about I.C.E. in the Boston/Eastern MA areas.

Bad News: The Chief Supervisor Agent for CT/WMASS does not see the same cooperative, proactive attitude from his EMASS counterparts. He will get me the individual name or two of someone who might help out but no guarantees. He did say this is slowly being changed & addressed - he asks for patience and understanding.

Good News: He did tell me that if someone in Eastern MA comes across something significant or has a question, to have them call either his office or for after hours contact me. I can in turn reach him at home. Its not perfect but he does want to help the us out.

While the agents from ICE are pretty good guys the problem is the Boston SAC is a pompous idiot. She treats cops like $^%*.

Anyone from Mass can type in "INS" at the CJIS machine and run anyone. VT, actually Williston will get back to you via the teletype, the only bad thing is takes up to 15-20 minutes. Call them and make a contact. A baseball hat later and I call a guy who runs them within a couple of minutes

They have to get the actual physical folder from where the guy entered, and then run his BOP and see if he has any of the "Deportable" convictions. If you want to do the legwork, BOP the guy and find a felony or any of the 51 (I'll find them and post them) deportable crimes and then go to that court or have them send you a certified copy of that conviction. Just understand that they are buried, so I only refer real knuckleheads to them..
