Beacon Hole - Landlords - ‘Drunk, dumb’ students ruining their neighborhood
By Jay Fitzgerald
Boston Herald General Economics Reporter
Tuesday, June 27, 2006 - Updated: 10:30 AM EST

Landlords on Beacon Hill are saying no to renting apartments to loud-mouthed, vomiting Suffolk University students as tensions mount between the school and residents sick of rowdy Animal House behavior in their toney neighborhood.
Suffolk is responding to the uproar with plans to hire new staff and off-duty police officers this fall to curb students’ drunken antics in private apartments strewn throughout Beacon Hill, the Herald has learned.
But it seems many landlords, pressured by residents, are now simply refusing to rent to off-campus undergraduates known for late-night parties and street carousing, real estate agents say.

“They’re all drunk and dumb,” said Thomas Dooley, owner of Louisburg Properties, referring to the most unruly of young students. “This year landlords have just said, ‘Enough!”’
“We just changed our policy,” said Randy Colins of Crescent Realty on Beacon Hill, referring to his firm’s new no-rentals-to-undergrads rule.
“It’s a real backlash,” said another real estate agent. “Landlords are hearing from residents.”
Babak Bina, chairman of the Beacon Hill Business Association, said he’s also hearing increased grumbling among both landlords and residents about the noisy ways of some Suffolk undergraduates.
But Bina, a Beacon Hill restaurant and apartment building owner, said the community has to work with Suffolk to find a “balance” that protects residents while also allowing Suffolk to thrive as a university.
John Nucci, vice president for government and community affairs at Suffolk, said the controversy shows why Suffolk needs to build a new 800-student dorm on Somerset Street.
But he acknowledged Suffolk can do more - and this fall it’s hiring extra personnel and weekend cops to monitor students living off-campus.
Residents vehemently oppose the proposed dorm, saying it will only add to their late-night woes.
Dooley said some landlords don’t need much incentive to bar undergrads from their buildings, which are often trashed by students.

It appears that Suffolk University will be hiring off-duty SUPD Officers to monitor the off campus housing situation. Did I read this correctly, or are they going to hire Boston PD off duty officers? From what I understand the Suffolk Administration still hasn't provided the Officers with firearms or Deputy Sheriffs powers. Has this changed? Are they now armed properly or are they still waving batons and OC around? Are they now sworn Deputy Sheriffs in Suffolk County. That is good news if the Suffolk Administration finally smartened up and armed the trained officers. Any thoughts? Stay safe.

Last time I saw a Suffolk Officer he did not have a firearm. With all the violence in Boston, I think they would want to arm their police force.

They pay thier campus police officers so much that there isn't much internal vocalization for arming.

suffolk unversity police are unarmed and they are state police specials, and I believe they are also suffolk county sheriffs too. Its a good and good benies.

To answer all your questions:

Suffolk University is talking about hiring off-duty BOSTON police officers to patrol the Beacon Hill area. As of now, there is no talk of allowing Suffolk University's own officers to do this.

The SUPD is not armed and they probably won't be until one of their officers gets shot.

The SUPD has only Special State Police powers. They are NOT deputized.

If the Suffolk officers don't have deputy powers, it's probably a good idea to hire BPD detail officers. Besides there being no jurisdiction issues, I can't see a BPD Officer being the least bit impressed by the "do you know who my daddy is" speech.

I just love some of the quotes that were used to describe the Suffolk Students. Hiring BPD details may be a sensible short term solution but I say give SUPD what they need and let them Police their own students.
