Police officers in Orange lauded for rescue effort

By Ann G. Forcier CORRESPONDENT

ORANGE— Officer James Buccaroni and Sgt. Robert Haigh received kudos and thanks from town officials last night for saving a life and preventing an accident earlier this month.

According to a letter from firefighter-paramedic Mark T. Vitale, Mr. Buccaroni, assisted by Mr. Haigh, responded to a call about a vehicle moving slowly and erratically on Route 2 about 7 p.m. June 11. According to the letter, Officer Buccaroni left his cruiser, chased on foot, and entered the vehicle to bring it to a stop. The driver, it turns out, was suffering from a life-threatening drop in blood sugar.

Mr. Vitale said he believed Mr. Buccaroni both saved the driver and prevented the driver from hurting anyone else. “The people of the town of Orange should be thankful that they have such fine officers who are willing to put another human life in place of their own.”

Selectmen gave both officers a certificate of appreciation for service above and beyond the call of duty.
