Is it required in Massachusetts for an emergency personel's vehicle to have a red light permit for wigwags?

If your fire department Policy and Procedure requires the chief to issue you a permit before you can have them, then thats the rules... follow them or you go bye-bye. Thats how it was way back in the day when I did that stuff. There was a waiting period before the chief would issue the permit (or should I say apply for one for you, whatever), and it was clear that NO warning equipment was OK to have until you get the permit. By the statute of MGL you COULD put a siren on the day you become a Volie FF, because the laws for that are worded "used in the official duties of.." or something to that effect, no permit needed.
But if your department requires a permit before you get anything, then thats the rules and they wont hesitate to take your gear back and send you back to scanner land. If they tell you that you have to wear a G-string under your gear, then thats the rules. Dont stick out like a sore thumb and start breaking them too early.... Bad karma.....

If he uses them, he would be subject to being cited.

White lights which I am assuming the wigwags you are talking about are considered colored lights. Permit required! not sure if a red light permit will cover it?

Illegal on private vehicles since January of 1995, flashing headlights are now legal on firefighters, vehicles as part of the Red Light Permit issued by the Chief pursuant to Chapter 90 section 7E.

They are now legal to use under 540 CMR 22.05 (5) and (6).

In all the years that I have had a red light permit I have never been asked to show it, why, because I have never used the lights in an inapropriate manner.

It seems most people who get in trouble with wig-wags, red.blue etc.. are doing something stupid to draw attention to themselves in the first place
