State trooper struck on traffic detail

By Linda Bock
TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

MILLVILLE— A state police sergeant working a traffic detail was seriously injured today when he was struck by a construction truck that was backing up in a work zone on the southbound side of Route 146, just inches away from Uxbridge and yards away from the Rhode Island.

The sergeant, Matthew Murray, 38, of Auburn, was conscious, and was wearing a reflective safety vest at the time he was injured.

“Hopefully, he’s going to be okay,’’ said State Police Lt. Eric Anderson of the Framingham barracks, before a impromptu press conference set up on the side of the highway. “Serious injuries, but they appear not to be life-threatening.”

State Police Lt. Sean M. Baxter of the Holden barracks conducted a preliminary investigation and reported that a red Ford F-450 rack body truck carrying orange cones was backing-up in a construction work zone when it struck the state police sergeant. The sergeant was outside of his cruiser, facing oncoming traffic when he was struck.

According to state police, the sergeant suffered serious injuries and was transported by a LifeFlight helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center _ University Campus in Worcester. The medical helicopter landed on the highway, and Route 146 was shut down in both directions early this afternoon.

Lt. Anderson said the construction truck is owned by J.H. Lynch & Sons Inc., which has regional offices in Millbury. The driver, Jose J. Pereira, 59, of North Dartmouth, was cited for failure to use care in backing up. Lt. Anderson declined to say how fast the driver of the construction truck was going when it struck the sergeant.

Flairs warned drivers of the accident scene coming up to the construction area, and the incident backed up traffic much of the afternoon. Drivers who were already slowed by the one-lane of open traffic slowed even more to take a look at the dozens of state troopers at the scene and reporters and television trucks that also converged.

The sergeant was struck literally inches from the Millville-Uxbridge town line, just south of the Coppola Street bridge in Uxbridge and yards before the Welcome to Rhode Island sign. The green Millville sign was lying on the side of the highway.

Construction crews continued work on paving the highway just down the road a bit just past the place the sergeant was struck.

The incident remains under investigation. No further information is currently available.

Ok, not to play monday night quarterback here but -- I have driven trucks before. How could this MORON miss a reflective saftey vest in his rear view. Secondly, he must have been going at a good rate of speed to hurt the trooper that bad.
Hopefully Trooper Murray will be ok. Prayers are going out that he will.

A bit off topic but similar incident. This truck backed up all the way over her killing her instantly. An eye witness described it like dropping a glass jar on pavement.

Matt was very lucky to survive.

I meant side view mirrors, sorry bout that.

I hope the Trooper is going to be OK.What an a** that truck driver is.He should have been watching where the hell he goes.

I heard he was released from the hospital today. Bunch of stiches and staples. Unknown on broken bones. I guess there was nothing life threatening...assuming being hit by a dump truck isn't life threatening. Home and on the road to recovery.

Something is VERY wrong here....

A Trooper outside his cruiser on a detail?

Best of Wishes Sgt Murray

Side note, why was the driver's door pulled off the Taurus on scene?

It said that immediately after he was hit Sgt. Murray retreated into the cruiser. I'm guessing the doors were removed for safer extraction.

That's an F'd up statement JERK OFF!

Posted by: rg1283

Lets not make this into a debate about why the Trooper was outside of the Cruiser.

Posted by: SinePari

The initial scene idicated there were life-threatening head injuries. He did get hit in the head with some metal beam sticking out of the back. All resources were deployed until his condition was determined.

Curious EMT, what posessed you to write that, then give best wishes?

I think it was just a joke, perhaps in poor taste, but I don't think he meant to insult Matt.

Posted by: Curious EMT

It absolutely was not meant as an insult towards the injured trooper, it's too bad some of you chose to interpret it as such.

I agree. Poor humor, however.

First,
Speedy recovery for our trooper friend.
second,
We actually have two officers here that need to have the door removed from our Taurus just to get in and out......Crown Vics 4-EVER!

Fortunately for Matthew, his head is the least vulnerable part of his person!

Hey CuriousEmt, as much as some locals and staties jib jab at each other on this site, the comment you made is bullshit. You can't be a COP.

It sure sounds like an insult to me

Posted by: Duff112

I agree it was probably a joke but WAS ABSOLUTELY IN POOR TASTE!!!. Apparently Curious
never heard of the statement "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all..."

Youre a friggin turd. For this to be the first comment you make when a trooper is almost killed shows your severe lack of character. There is NOTHING funny about this at all. You just made a lot of friends on the MSP with that comment loser.

Posted by: k9sheriff

Alot of details that we receive are from the MSP and I can think of many times being on the highway far inside the cones and still thinking that I was going to be killed by moron drivers coming so close to you it felt like the hair on your neck standing up.I was doing a detail with a local police officer last year, at night and this driver refused to stop as she was directly in front of him, oblivious that he was even there and he literally had to jump out of the way, then she pulled over into the parking lot after going by and of course was quite drunk.Thank god he wasn't hit.Regardless of the pro -con sheriff detail opinion it is a very dangerous job, and best luck to the Trooper for a speedy recovery.

lev-i-ty, n: 1a: excessive or unseemly frivolity...Websters New Collegiate Dictionary, 1977, Springfield, Massachusetts.

Once again, I think he meant it as a JOKE...maybe in bad taste, maybe not. "Unseemly" is the key word here. Perhaps my "head" comment should enjoy the same upbraiding as Curious EMT's comment.

For all you offended and outraged citizens out there: I've probably broken more bread and consumed more "mass quantities" with Matt than most of you. Matt's okay, humor is good.

I didn't realize there were that many moonbats on this board...relax, Matt is okay.

And as to the "trooper-out-of-the-car" comment: take a ride down the Pike. 'Nuff said.

Posted by: k9sheriff

I was just referring to some past incidents. As for EMT there's no doubt it was just humor in light of the situation.Moonbats;I thought I was the only Howie Carr fan?I love that word!

Posted by: dcs2244

Moonbats, dude...they're like horse manure...they're all over the place!

Posted by: PBC FL Cop

The important fact is that Matt is doing well, and we're all glad to hear that. Our prayers are with him and his family for a speedy recovery.

Posted by: DoD102

Agreed, prayers to Matt and his family. Remember, we're all in this together.

Posted by: lawdog671

If the relax comment was directed towards me, let me say this. EMT is a big boy I'm sure, and completely capable of defending what he wrote. I'm certain it was a joke too, but considering the timing of the statement and the circumstances surrounding it, I failed to find the humor. I "know" Sgt. Murray well also, and as someone who was concerned for his well being, I found the comment in poor taste considering. Don't tell me when and how I should be offended, because I wouldn't speak for you. I found it in poor taste and made a comment. If EMT has a problem Im sure he'll address it.
