MBTA/ State Merger?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

A Transit Officer that I am friendly with stated that it is becoming more and more likely that a merger will be taking place sooner rather than later between the Mass State Police and the MBTA Transit Police. Has anyone else heard this lately? Is it really this imminent? Any other thoughts?

I seriously doubt that you will see troopers riding the buses and trains, wishful thinking. MBTA also has a different retirement system that cannot be transfered to Group 3 or Group 4 retirement.

The EPO's are closer to merging and they have no chance at all so......answer your question?

Merging these two would not make economic sense, there is no duplication of effort like there is at MassPort. So before the State merges them they should take a look at Mass Port, maybe even eliminate the MPA and just have MSP

EPO's and MBTA are a specialized area of policing, which they are both good at

The suspected merger in the late 80s and early 90s brought comments like Troopers giving license tests and doing school bus inspections or better yet guarding the capitol. YA RIGHT. Then in 1992 it happened and continues today. I remember seeing RMV all white cruisers with the MSP door seals patrolling prior to them being painted. I myself do not think another merger is coming anytime soon, however with the wrong political parties in control anything could happen here in Massachusetts. Sorry to bring up bad memories to the Senior Troopers who were on during the merger. As I recall RMV gave just about everyone rank prior to the merger as well.

I can't imagine that happening....although my sister, being an MBTA officer, would LOVE it!

I still can't imagine the kick in the cahonies it was for the State Police, to be forced to merge with the Registry cops way back when...no offense, but that's unbelievable! Anything for the mighty $$

The MBTA retirement system is Railroad Retirement. You CANNOT transfer any municipal/state time into MBTA. You cannot buy back military time. That alone would make it verrrrry difficult. You need to be able to put in 23 years minimum for full retirement table at MBTA. Don't know how you could take any of that with you into State system either

I don't think you can merge an "Authority" PD with MSP.

I think 48 weeks is trying to stir it up!

He's also trying to knock the MassPort Police and the MSP in another thread...very interesting

The word on the street is that the Transit Authourity Police, as they are now known, would be merging with the Boston Municipal Police in hopes of joining the BPD. Just what I heard. Hell I hope they grab some of us specials with them!

48 hours has been blatantly anti-State Police all along. He is just trying to stir the pot again.

You could have the MSP take over the MBTA Police. Here is how, lay off all the MBTA Cops, and replace them with Troopers. Problem solved. Or Better yet have Naratoone Replace the MBTA. What some great IDEAS. Realistically your not going to ever see a MBTA Merger. As far as Massport Police are concerned, yes they are there, but they aren't HUGE like some people make them out to be, they are like a Campus Police Department (Like DMH, College, etc.) with a specific responsability to protect the ports, etc. Why don't we merge all the Community College Police Departments and make them part of the State Police. We can have a Troop K for Kollege. And use the old Troop A "K" Call signs.

The legislature could do this by changing the laws - I wouldn't rule anything out.

Indiana is going through some similar turmoil right now with the merger of the Marion County (the county that Indianapolis is in) Sheriff's Department with the Indianapolis Police Department into a new Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The Sheriff will control the combined agency.

WOW! I heard they're gonna merge the Staties, Transit Police, BPD, the Munis, Housing, the School Police, all campus departments in the City and any other department I missed into ONE SINGLE POLICE DEPARTMENT in the City. It's gonna happen next week!!! Keep your eyes and ears open...

There is going to be no merger between the MSP and the MBTA Police, period. Get the idea out of your heads and move on.
