Hello, I'm a patrol officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.I'm originally from Massachusetts and was a CO there in the DOC for 5 years before becoming a Police Officer.I'm really interested in gang investigations and gang suppression. We have a large gang problem here in Las Vegas as in many major cities. We have the the Rollin 60's Crips, Piru Bloods,MS-13,Skinheads,Brown Pride, Mexican Mafia (EME) and numerous other black,Hispanic,Asian and white street gangs.Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs here are a major problem as well.We have chapters of the Hells Angels and Mongols and others here. The riot between the Hells Angels and the Mongols in 2002 at the Harrah's Casino in Laughlin,Nevada during the annual Laughlin River Run biker rally left 5 OMG's dead and dozens others injured by stabbings, beatings, and gunshots.Laughlin, although 80 miles from Vegas is within the jurisdiction of the LVMPD because we are the police force of not just the City of Las Vegas, but all of Clark County (larger area than the state of New Jersey, 8,000 square miles). We have a large Gang Unit conducts investigations/enforcement/suppression of gangs. There is a link below.
I've done a ride along with the gang unit as well as gang classes and hope to become a member of the unit someday. All gang officers here are Detectives although they work both plainclothes assignments and tactical assignments where they wear BDU style uniforms and have special weapons and equipment.
My question to Massachusetts officers is: How big is the gang problem in MA and what police departments have Gang Units?I know in the DOC incarcerated gang members
are kept in special "gang blocks" and the some prison's have "gang intel officers" to keep tabs and share info with law enforcement.

I am no expert, but the state police have a gang task force and most of the large and mid sized cities have their own gang units. I know cities like worcester, boston, fitchburg and springfield have gang problems but have no idea on other cities and towns.

Boston has the Youth Violence strike force, Chelsea, Revere, Fitchburg, Worcester all have either part time or full time units. The SP has I think six or seven full time units and they are part of a couple FBI Safe Streets In a couple of places. The State Police Gang Unit has just purchased a $300 K Gang Database that any and every PD can access in real time.

Hampden County had a very successful gang unit. I believe it was headed by either Springfield PD or the MSP.
