Looking for a good on/off duty gun

I have recently been hired for a part time officer position in a small western Mass hill town (all the officers are part time in this department). We purchase our own duty weapons, and our chief wants us to carry off duty as well. I'm looking for suggestions for something that will be good for duty, but also small enough to be concealable. I am a big guy but have medium sized hands. I used to have a glock 20, and found that frame just a bit too large for my hands to be comfortable. Also, being up in the hills, I'm told most times when I'll be on duty, my nearest backup will be 15 to 20 minutes away, so I want something with decent magazine capacity. So far, I'm thinking Glock 23, with G22 15 round magazines in my mag pouches. I'm thinking of .40, but willing to look at other options.

The chief is very proactive about us qualifying, getting plenty of range time in, as well as retention both on and off duty. I know that's a concern for many when you hear "part time officer", and it's understandable. If there are any specific training courses that would help me even more in this area, please tell me about them. I'm willing to foot the bill for whatever will make me a better p/t officer.

Thank you for your answers.

I guess the Glock would be a good choice!

Sounds like a plan. Make sure you buy the thing using ID/letterhead to get the right discount.

As a side note, how are you guys fixed for patrol rifles?

Glock 23 is decent for on/off duty. Also the Smith & Wesson 4516 is a good choice.

Congradulations on your new job and stay safe!!

Back-up is 15-20 mins away, O-shit!

I remember the shit hitting the fan one time and we called for back-up. An MSP unit and a Cruiser from 2 Towns away were there in LESS than 4 minutes. SWEET! I remember smelling the burning rubber from those cruisers after they showed up. Nice.

The S&W 4006 is also nice too, .40 cal. with 11 in the mag + 1 in the pipe. The H&K USP in .40 and .45 are a nice choice of hand cannon to think about also.

Somehow, I just don't see the chief being okay with those... but hey, you never know. And thanks everyone for the responses!
