So this seems like a real common thread - i looked through the equip forum up to a year ago and found pretty much nothing.

So here it is: What gun do people carry on duty? Glock and Sig i'm sure are top 2. However i was unaware until the other day that officers can get non AG approved guns - which got me thinking...... How bout them kimbers and Para's?

what kind of trigger system? DAK, SAO?

i was thnking the Kimber Tactical Pro II might be a valient choice..... but then again living in mass i've never seen a a kimber in person - let alone shot one..... but i hear good things.

The only "dept" that I know of that carries 1911 in Mass will be one of Boston's tactical teams. The firearms are on order from SigArms at this time.

In general, an officer must carry what is specified by the department, Im not sure of any "free for all" departments that let you cary whatever you want.

They can still order non-AG-compliant and non-EOPS-list firearms through the department on dept. letterhead.

Here at LVMPD we have the optional duty weapon program. We can carry pretty much what we want as long as it's 9mm, .40, or .45 a there is list of manufacturers that include Glock, Sig, H&K,Kimber,Colt,S&W, Beretta, and a few others. The weapon and holster has to be inspected by the department's FTTU(Firearms Training and Tactics Unit) and then qualification takes place every 3 months.night sights, tactical lights, and lasers are also authorized for duty weapons. The department provides the duty and training ammo.the department also reimburses up to $750.00 for the Officer's duty weapon and holster.
We are also authorized optional off duty and backup weapons as well as optional patrol rifles and shotguns.I carry a Glock 21 .45 for a duty weapon and a Glock 30 .45 for a backup/off duty weapon.

What do you think about the argument that all the Officers on a department should carry the same firearms, so that the magazines are interchangable in the event if an extended fire fight?

I think that's a decent argument along with the training, armory etc and so on. As well from a liability standpoint it's prolly a good idea too.

I stand in awe of your department.....if only that were possible in this state, the bluest of the blue states.....we're lucky to have guns at all...

Here's a repost of mine from another thread in reference to the MSP:

Sig Sauer P226 in .40 cal - Duty Pistol
Sig Sauer P229 in .40 cal - Duty Pistol for personnel w/smaller hands
Sig Sauer P239 in .40 cal - Detective Unit Pistol
All pistols are traditional double action/single action.

There are also two specialized pistols
Sig Sauer 232 in .380 cal - Massport/Troop F Detective Unit/Admin Unit Pistol
An unnamed pistol in .32 cal - Narcotics/Undercover personnel (I will not name the pistol, this is a public message board)

Remington 870 in 12 Gauge - Standard Shotgun (all variations, latest models are Scattergun Technologies Models) The MSP stop team also uses specialized shorty Remington 870's and Remington 1100 semi-auto shotguns.

There are no patrol rifles (at this time) but the MSP Stop Team utilizes Bushmaster M-4 Carbines that are select fire and modified to the tastes of the user (as far as illumination systems, sighting systems, etc.) They also use the H&K UMP submachinegun in .40 cal for certain CQB applications.

The Troop F Anti Terrorism Unit (ATU) utilizes the H&K MP5SD (suppressed) submachinegun in 9mm.

I cannot speak for other Troopers, but I am completely satisfied with the Sig Sauer pistol, it is reliable, accurate and easy to shoot. My only beef is that I would prefer a heavier caliber (.45 ACP), but I realize that the job is making a compromise between stopping power, capacity, and the ability of people to qualify. Remember that most police officers are not "gun guys", and practice very little (if at all), except for during qualification. I am also completely satisfied with the Remington 870, especially the Scattergun models. They are accurate, rugged and simply the shotgun all others are measured against.

In Somerville we carry SIG 229R DAK in .40 cal. The regulars and us Auxiliaries carry the same weapons and Holsters.
