T&G Letter to the Editor Week to recognize corrections officers
National Correctional Officers Week is May 7-13. Since 1985, this week has recognized the significant contributions of all corrections professionals throughout the field of corrections. In Massachusetts, more than 4,000 men and women perform their job duties with distinction and dedication every day in the state’s 18 correctional facilities. These law enforcement professionals play a vital role as members of the commonwealth’s public safety team.
Over the last two years, correctional staff has played an important part in implementing the recommendations of the Governor’s Commission on Correction Reform. Working together, they are making measurable changes to the Massachusetts Department of Correction’s culture, philosophy, policies and procedures.
We are improving the culture of the DOC to an environment that focuses on exceptional performance and accountability. The improper actions of a few correctional employees should not tarnish the professionalism of the rest of the work force. Thousands of correctional staff come to work every day and do an outstanding job in a difficult environment.
Please join me in acknowledging the men and women who ensure the safe, secure and humane operation of our correctional facilities.
