TAUNTON -- Almost 25 pounds of marijuana was discovered by a resident walking his dog yesterday afternoon in area where children play.
"Depending on the quality," Officer Robert Kramer said. "The street value could easily be somewhere between $1,000 to $3,000 a pound."
The potential $75,000 of marijuana was inside a 3-by-1-foot hockey bag. The bag was found on a dirt path trail near a pond off Plain Street, near the Berkley line, said Kramer.
The pond is used for fishing and ice skating by children, Sgt. Paul Roderick said.
"Before he (the resident) even got close enough to the bag, he could smell the marijuana," Roderick said.
In fact, yesterday afternoon the whole police station smelled of marijuana.
Kramer, who responded to the resident’s call at about 1 p.m. confiscated the bag, tagged it for evidence and secured it at the police station. The hockey bag contained two trash bags filled with dried loose marijuana buds -- each weighing about 7 pounds, Kramer said. Another 10.3 pounds of harder compacted marijuana was wrapped in tin foil and plastic wrap, almost resembling a silver brick.
"I can’t imagine why someone would leave this there," Kramer said. "It could have been a meeting place. Someone could have ditched it because they got spooked."
But Roderick said, the bag full of marijuana had not been sitting in that location for long. It was not frozen, wet or damaged.
The marijuana will go to state police and be destroyed, Kramer said.
The incident is under investigation by the city’s vice squad, he added.
"We’re just lucky to get that bag before it started hitting the streets," Kramer said.
