I know that most police officers have Nextel cellphones for personal use. It just makes sense for quick communication with other officers or whomever. Is that the only feature that makes Nextel the favorite? I ask because I'm in the market for a new phone/plan and it seems like all the other companies are starting to make Direct Connect-esque features.

As it seems you are in Boston...Nextel would make sense. I think as a cop you also get some good pricing on plans with ID.

Out here in the boondocks Nextel is a waste of money.

Nextel isn't all it is cracked up to be in Boston either. Yeah, the Direct Connect feature is convenient......when it works. Alot of times, the transmission is so poor, I feel like throwing it out the window. Also, I'll randomly get voicemails, without my phone even ringing. Quality of reception is spotty at best too. I know alot of people that have recently decided to pay the Nextel early termination fee ($200) and move on to Verizon, Cingular etc.

Nextel i 530, nuff said. It is tough, takes beating and keeps on ticking. Plus it's green screen is nice at night. I got the Nextel National power 500 plan. It fits my needs at a reasonalbe cost.

On the service note, I havent dropped anymore or less calls than people with verizon or cingular that I work with.

Yeah I ment to say the I 580 has a caller I.D. screen on the outside unlike the i530 where you have to open the phone to see whos calling you.

Our unit uses Nextels....when they work, they're fine, but they often don't.......

I have had nextel for 3 years. Direct connect is the reason I got it as it makes for easy secure communications with other cops, when it works. However, It seems to never work when I need it. Over the last year my coverage has gotten worse instead of better. 75% of my phone calls go directly into voice mail and then some times I don't get the mail notification. I can't remember the last time that I was able to complete a call without it dropping. I have made nextel aware of this and they really don't give a shit. I will be switching back to cingular as soon as I have the time to get to one of there phone stores.

I have a nextel i 530, the phone is only $30 to replace which is good for me because I wreck these things, however the service always seems to kick out just when I need to call another officer or dispatch... bad luck i suppose

Nextel service has gotten worse since the Sprint merger. It seems like Sprint and Nextel have yet to improve service areas. Instead there's alot more people on the existing network that can't handle the volume. I recently went to Cingular because of coverage issues. But I too often had many calls go to v-mail even when ihad service and I wouldn't get voicemail notification for HOURS after receiving it. The direct connect is a nice feature, but like everyone else said "when it works..". Nextel sucks, buh-bye. Hello Cingular.

I whole heartidly agree.... Nextel has sucked the big ass ever since the sprint hostile take over. I'm at a 65-70% drop call rate now and it's getting worse. To top it off, Nextel is costing me more and more every month now that everyone I know is switching to Verizon, so I'm now going over my minutes . I'll be switching over to Verizon real soon.
