I'm looking for a career change....Currently not involved in the dispatch field/no training.
Looking to see how many agencies would take on someone with no training etc..yes would be looking for full time.
Thanks,
TJ

Is there a reason you're wanting to get into dispatching?

You realize most dispatchers are making less than $15/hr, at least to start, correct?

Seems to be more money on the north shore.

Posted by: mtc

Call takers at MSP HQ are posted for about $15 to start. We call them dispatchers.

All you need is a clean criminal record, and be a legal citizen.

Those same "call takers" not only answer phones, they multitask by looking out for the well-being and safety of officers and fire/ems officials while enduring the mightier than thou attitude from the same people we take care to worry about-all for that menial wage.

Menial? I don't think $15+ an hour to start, with merely a high school diploma required is exactly menial.

Have at it Brownie, it's all yours,,, I'd rather be bitched at by troopers than bitched at by the general public on a recorded line.

I personally think that everyone who is interested in becoming a dispatcher have a long talk with someone who has done the job for a few years. It is not all it is cracked up to be, and there is almost no money in it. There is a reason why there are so many openings all the time, and it is not always because people are advancing to become cops. the job is very boring, you are trapped in a room for 8 hours or more, you have to listen to people complain all day long about things that you have no control over, and all hell breaks loose anytime there is a friggin storm or something. sorry to vent to everybody, i just recommend that people take a long hard look at the proffession.
I am moving on to something else after 3 years, and i wish i could have gotten advice like this before i wasted my time.

4ransom, while I respect your opinion, your post has many blanket statements of generality that are not true everywhere. And it not very good "advice".

Pay can be excellent depending on where you get hired. I can bring home over $60,000 a year with working some Overtime (not excessive). If you choose to work at a small agency in the middle of no where, where the 911 center isn't given the attention it deserves, then yes, you'll probably not make that much.

The levels of bordeom also depend on where you work. My agency has a good mix. It can be pretty damn slow in the middle of February when it's -20 degrees outside at 0300 in the morning, but in the Middle of July it can be unbelievably busy 24 hours a day.

People leaving can be attributed to several factors and the severity of each, as usual, depends on the agency. Moving over to be a police offier is probably one of the least likely causes of high turnover. The list includes, but is not limited too:

Lack of up to date technology in the comm center
Lack of respect by the field units
Poor training/hiring standards
Shift work/rotating schedules/long hours/working holidays-weekends
Foot in the door to be a PO (as you mentioned)
Poor work environment caused by:
Crappy administration
Crappy co-workers
Low pay/poor benefits
High stress levels
Excessive mandated OT/Short staffing

Getting complaints from people all day is the jist of the job. Even without someone telling you that 3 years ago, I don't see how you could have not known that was part of the job when you got into it. And having control over what is going on at the scene is you controlling the call and sending the appropriate response.

This profession certainly isn't for everyone. Good agency research on the part of the person looking for the job prior to applying can help you decide where you want to work. This includes doing sit a longs to make sure this is something you CAN and WANT to do. Those of us who stay love the profession with a passion and personally, I highly doubt I'll ever do anything else.

How often does the state police hire for dispatchers??? and are they posting hte positions on the CEO page anymore??/

Posted by: mtc

MSP hires every couple of months, usually mainly for GHQ. (cell hell) Troop dispatch positions are posted separately, for each troop, and don't have as much turnover.
Watch the CEO page if you don't have access to a LEAPS terminal.

Milford posted a dispatch position,, the money wasn't bad.... again... speak and type english and have a HS diploma.

I just happened to check out these posts and I know that westwood pd is hiring dispatchers . From what I'v heard alot of pds will start you part time, this is good because you get the same training. Good luck and remember it does not hurt to call these places to find out if there ia a position available, you never know you could luck out before its posted.

I worked at MSP GHQ (cell hell doesn't even begin to describe it) for four years (2001-2005). I will say that I did enjoy my time there for the most part, I started there with the mindset from day one that it was a way to get experience to eventually move on and become a cop, which is what I did. So as you can imagine by the end of my time there I was really ready to move on. Like every other job in the world there are good things and bad things about it. On the upside is that the pay is pretty decent, good benefits, a good work schedule (4 and 2), and a decent amount of time off can be taken. The downside is that there is a high volume of workload. That place takes more 911 calls in a day than most places do all year. That can make for not the best work environment at times. Right before I left however, they did a major refit to the center that did improve the work environment slightly. Even though you have the title of a Dispatcher, at GHQ you are pretty much a call taker. If you want something that is closer to dispatching you should apply to one of the troop dispatches when those positions open up.
