SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A hostage situation involving an inmate and a female correctional officer at the California State Prison in Sacramento ended without injury to either person late Saturday.

The incident began in the C Facility #1 dining room at about 7 a.m. The inmate took the officer hostage utilizing an inmate-manufactured stabbing instrument, according to television station KCRA-TV.

The institution was put on full lockdown, and a State of Emergency was initiated. All inmates were recalled to their cells and were accounted for. The prison’s Emergency Operations Plan was also activated, the station reported.

Prison officials credited the facility’s Crisis Response Team for negotiating a successful resolution to the situation just after 5 p.m. Saturday.

The inmate is identified as 41-year-old Michael David Watson. He has been in prison since 1994 after being convicted in San Diego County on robbery and false imprisonment charges.

The officer who was taken hostage is identified as 45-year-old Sheila Mitchell. Officials said Mitchell has been a correctional officer for nine years.

Mitchell was taken to an area hospital for evaluation following the incident.
