Next exam and advice?

Hey, hows it going? well this is my first post, but i've been "browsing" the forums here for a month or so. Well, anyway, my friend who's dad is a Trooper out of Holden (I believe) told me that the next exam will probably be "late this summer". I realize that this is often asked, but has anyone heard any new info on it? Also, how old do you have to be to take the exam? I know that you have to be 21 to get the job, but I am 18 and and just finishing up my senior year in High School - will I be eligible to take the test?

Also, are there any Troopers out there that have any advice for me? Like I said, I'm just finishing up my Senior year in High School, and I will be attending Westfield State next year for Criminal Justice, hopefully for both my Baccalaureate and Masters Degrees. I hear that military experience is almost a must - specifically the Marines. Is this true? I have been considering enlisting in either the Marine Reserves or the Navy Reserves later in my college years - how much weight will this hold in the application process?

Thank you so much for any help and advice you can give me. Stay safe out there.

My buddy that just got on has no military experience and only an associate's degree. But if you do have it, most agencies give you 2 points for the written part of the exam. Not too sure if MSP is that way. And yea, as previously posted you need to be 21.

Posted by: futureMSP

Military will count if you are a veteran. The only advice you really need is score high on the written exam and throughout the rest of the process, should you get that far.

Posted by: ponyboy

MSP gives 2 points if you have veteran's preferance.

Stay out of trouble at WSC! Wouldn't want one mistake to ruin your future chances.

Agreed...I'm a freshman at WSC, if you are looking for a school to party at, WSC is not it! I'd estimate half the CJ kids have "5-5-50's", campus security is pretty tight...I can't help but laugh when I've beat half the students here before even taking the test!

Posted by: CTrain

do the 5-5-50's go on your record, or are they strictly a school punishment?

I'm not really sure, though if/when you get into the process its definitely going to show up in your background check. Also, the buzz going around campus is they are changing it to a "10-100" (10 hours community service, $100 fine), but i'm not sure if/when that is going to happen.

One:

Stay out of trouble. The walls have ears and the trees have eyes.

Two:

Try being a common sense investigator. The answer to your question is easily found online:

Minimum Requirements:
1) Possess a High school diploma or G.E.D.

2) Be able to obtain firearms permit.

3) Be least 19 years old on the date of the examination.

4) Be able to swim.

5) Be a United States citizen at appointment.

6) Be less than 35 years old upon appointment to the State Police Academy.

7) Not smoke.

Three:
Anyone can take the test if they meet the requirements. Score alone counts to start the "application process". Score low, don't expect to go any further. Military or not. Fail any part of the process, don't expect to go any further, military or not. Remember, there are literally thousands of people trying for a mere 100 + spots.

Is that correct? I was under the impression you must be 21 to take the test? Or is 21 just the earliest you can apply?

Chapter 22C: Section 10. Appointments to department of state police

No person who has not reached his twenty-first birthday shall be enlisted for the first time as an officer of the state police. No person shall be eligible to take a competitive examination conducted pursuant to section 11 if he has reached his thirty-fifth birthday on or before the final date for the filing of applications for such examination, as stated in the examination notice.

Thank you very much to those who responded. Does anybody else have any advice? How about for working out? I know that I still have a looong way to go, but I am positive that this is what I want to do, and I would like to best prepare myself both mentally and physically in my pursuit of being a Trooper. Are there any specific workouts that would help prepare me? I work out 4-5 days a week, and I am starting to run often. What should be my goals as far as lifting and running? I'm about 6'3", and around 220, if that matters. Thanks

Posted by: andyuxb

As far as running, I believe the MSP PFT has a 1.5 mile run. I would aim for 10:00 or below. Trust me, it can be done, even for us bigger guys. I get timed on a 3 mile run, and at least once a week I run a speed workout on a 400m track that goes something like this: 200m sprint, 200m slow jog, 400m sprint/hard run, 400m slow jog < repeat 5 times. These will do wonders to bring down run times. I'm 6'2", 200, and run a 3-miler in 20 and change.

Not true. I graduated in '04 and he was still there up until early on in my junior year. The BEST steak and cheese I've ever had.

In response to the other question, things have changed. No where near the party school it used to be. You can still have a good time if you know where to look !

Don't get me wrong, it does happen, just not nearly as easy as some other schools I've visited (assuming you are talking about underage drinking). Besides the apartments where most of the residents are 21+ the campus is fairly quiet, most on campus partying could hardly be called a party, a small group of kids sitting around in a room not really doing anything

Off campus is a different story, theres a few well known streets in Westfield for boozing, but I know a lot of people who spend their weekends at UMASS to spare themselves from all the trouble of getting around the ISO's thur-sat

Posted by: Pvt. Cowboy

It always took some pretty decent acting skills to sign into halls like Scanlon while half-biffed with an ISO sitting right there... Is WSC still a weightlifting campus? I walked in after my senior year of high school wrestling at 152... and walked out freshman year at 185... All we did there was class, lift, eat...

Posted by: Prouty33

The kids that do lift are there everyday. I go at the same time MWF and see exactly the same people everytime, but hear the gym is packed all day. I came in at 155, and with one week left i'm about 165, only lifting 3 days a week...I'm happy with my results so far, and figure its a good starting point for the next 3 years...

Posted by: spahopeful

I've read that there is a possibility of an 80th maintainance class in 07 and if so, it would be made up of 95s. If this is true, would all the 95s get another opportunity and start the process from the beginning; application, run, interview, etc...or would they start by contacting the candidates with the highest ranking from the interview and work down?

I was one of those guys there at 4... every single day but saturday and sunday. Started with the creatine program, protein... completely changed the diet. It was crazy how healthy I had become as a freshman... aside of the liver-exploding amounts of alcohol...

I refused to use any type of supplements, hence why I haven't made any extreme changes. I have nothing against them and don't care when people do use them, but a good friend of mine has done it naturally and got just as big, just took a little longer. From what he's seen (he's the in the gym for 2-3 hours everyday kind of guy), when guys get off they tend to lose a lot of muscle mass...but I wouldn't know first hand, maybe you have some insight?

Really? Did he move? I swear he disappeared sometime mid 1990's. I went by there a few years ago and the shop is now something else.

Anything at 1-2am is "the best".....

Good point. His store was right downtown, closer to the rotary. The rumor was that the board of health shut him down but I seriously wonder if he got deported. Kind of just disapeared over night. I always heard the reason why he was only open late at night was so that the board of health couldn't inspect his place.

My advise to you is to start preparing yourself for a strict regimen. Like USMC TROOPER listed above, the test is the beginning, score low and forget about it. If you're able to score high and get to the interview process, obviously a background invest will be started on you, medical exam, and PT test, which is nothing to worry about. Once you are seated in front of three members of rank within the Mass State Police, be confident, be honest and know the history of the MSP. Know when the MSP was established, read up on the website. After all of this, if hired, get ready!! New Braintree MA baby here we go!!! Prepare mentally, physically!! I know that preparing yourself mentally isn't easy, but start lifting if you don't and run, run, run. Go into the academy running five or so miles. Just remember one thing, nothing better in this world, then putting on the Class A uniform of the Massachusetts State Police and standing at attention in front of thousands at graduation. Good luck!

if they did, and a big if since from what i have been hearing they don't want to put another class through from this exam, they would start at the point off the list where they left off.
