HADLEY - The conditions of the state trooper and driver of the Ford Ranger injured in a Thursday morning accident have been upgraded from serious to fair.

State Trooper David Kenney and Nicholas A. Ianniccheri were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following the morning accident on Bay Road. A hospital spokesman yesterday afternoon said their conditions had been upgraded.

Ianniccheri, 22, of Charlton was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from his truck when it collided head-on with the trooper's cruiser, according to police. Kenney had to be removed from the cruiser with extricating equipment.

While state police are still investigating, they have cited Ianniccheri with crossing marked lanes and operating to endanger.

The accident occurred near Bay Road where it intersects at Middle Street at a slight curve in the road.

The truck flipped over on to its roof and the front of the vehicle was smashed with a front wheel off the truck. The cruiser upon impact buckled and Kenney was trapped inside.

The portion of Bay Road from Middle Street to Aqua Vitae Road was closed for about three hours.

Kenney, a state trooper for 34 years, is stationed at the Northampton State Police Barracks.
