A 44-year-old man was shot and killed this afternoon after he opened fire on four state park rangers who had just discovered he was wanted on a robbery charge.
Two rangers were armed and returned fire; one of them suffered a gunshot wound to his elbow during the gun battle.
The 2:30 p.m. shooting took place on an access road along the north side of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, directly underneath the St. Georges Bridge on U.S. 13.
The 44-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been released, was flown to Christiana Hospital aftereward. The wounded officer was taken there as well.
Shortly before the shooting, a seasonal parker ranger, who had just started work today and was unarmed, spotted the 44-year-old walking beneath the bridge carrying a sign, police said. His car, a red Mercury Tracer, was blocking the access road.
The officer called for backup, Eventually, another unarmed seasonal ranger and two full-time rangers -- who do carry weapons -- arrived.
After they discovered the man was wanted on a robbery charge, he dove into his car and pulled out a 9mm wrapped in a garment -- possibly a shirt -- and started shooting, police said.
The two full-time rangers, who are believed to carry .40-caliber Sig Sauers, returned fire.
• State police have taken over the investigation.
• The fatal shooting is the first in the park rangers’ 35-year history, said Capt. Scott Carrow.
• The robbery leading to charges against the dead man occurred in Newark in late March.
• The wounded ranger is a 24-year veteran. The other full-time ranger is a six-year veteran.
