I was wondering if anyone out there knows of any on-line law enforcement training available? I am looking for specialized L.E. courses, and not CJ classes from Fisher or another college.

Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I thought there was a pilot program through the MSP, am I mistaken, or did budget cuts kill it?

That is the correct website. Some interesting stuff on the site too. You have to submit a letter to the academy on dept. letterhead, and they remit a username/password. Very simple process though, and worth it.

Does anyone know if you issued a certificate or record of taking the course by the MSP after you finish?

Some of the courses offered do have a certificate that acknowledges your completion. I believe MSP Online academy can only be accessed by MSP sworn personnel.

I see, yeah its a little confusing since it looks like it is restricted to MSP personnel, yet CampusOfficer says you need a department letterhead letter to mail in. Why would MSP want a letter from themselves? I guess if I was really interested I'd just call em, but I'm lazy. Thanks

Sorry, I confused everyone. If you are not a member of the MSP, you can ask for a user name/password for the website, and they will review your request and grant/decline you access. Obviously MSP personnel would be granted permission without a letter from their own dept.

Go to www.fletcdlp.com. This is the federal government's FLETC online training. I think you just need to submit your agencies name and your badge number when you sign up for it. It costs $150 dollars and is open to all local, state and federal law enforcement personnel. It's mostly federal stuff, but it can be used anywhere. They have some good courses like Death Investigation, Vehicle Searches, etc. and you get a good looking certificate that you can print out. It's best to use quality resume paper and a color laser printer so the certificate looks good. All in all, it's good training and fully accredited through FLETC. It is always a good idea to build up a portfolio of these training certificates to show potential employers.

Rangers.....I might take a couple of those on-line courses.

This is an interesting subject, because for the past couple of years a lot of colleges have been offering online classes. I took criminal law classes at BHCC and when I was there I noticed they also offer online classes ( for certain subjects- I dont remember if CJ was one of them).I never held online classes in high regard, that was just personal opion. But I've been seeing online classes advertised on TV latley and I think my view is changing in regards to this subject.

Today with the way that people are so busy which includes myself, its starting to sound more attractive. Especially when you want to enhance your eduction but just dont have the time to re-arrange your schedule to co-inside with driving to and from a college/university and studying. It sounds like a nice convient way to get that education at your own pace.

The only down side I see is there is no instructor/teacher to ask general questions too. And another question I would have, is if you do complete the coures does the certificate or degree(or transcripts) say anywhere on them that it was an online class that you took? In other words would a potential employer know whether you actually sat in the class room or sat at your computer at home.

I think the fact that someone actually took the time out of there schedule to get a degree shows dedication and seriousness about there career. Now I'm not down playing the online classes (because I'm considering them myself)but if I was an employer thats how I may view it, obviously if the interviewer knew. Thats why I ask the question if it says anywhere on the transcripts or certificate/degree how it was obtained.

But I'm starting to like the idea of it more an more.

Just a side note, my buddy is taking classes in CJ with Phoenix Online and he loves it. When he graduates, he can fly down to U of Phoenix, AZ and graduate with the class he never saw! amongst those that attended the University. Kinda cool.

I work as a Dispatcher for the MSP and I have completed about 80% of the course offered through the online academy. To my knowledge the courses are available to all law enforcement in the Commonwealth. The main reason i belive it is open to all LEOs is that the site is on the internet and not the MASP intranet (network). On the site it gives a contact number or email address for the trooper who runs the program for LEOs to set up a username and password. I'm not sure how to go about this as I am already in the system.
As far as certificates/proof of completion go I've only come upon one course which offers a certificate and it wouldn't load properly.
The courses do offer a wealth of information and I belive they are part of the MSP required in-service training.

Hunter, I don't know about other schools but , I took an online course last spring for sociology at Massasoit.
It was great.. To be honest I thought It would be a joke but I really learned a lot, and the prof. was available by phone or email.
Plus there was a predetermined time for once a week for 2 hours to chat live with others in the class and the teacher.
Also there was a message board to touch on subject matter. I have yet to see any CJ courses but I would jump at the chance to take one.
Just my 2 cents on the matter.
I am not at home so I couldn't get a link for this but here is a state web site for mass colleges that offer online courses. (www.mco.mass.edu)
This really doesn't apply as Training but may be helpful for anyone pursuing their degree in CJ.

Well you might want to check out this web site www.thebackup.com for online training and CD's. they have some good courses that deal with LE only.

Don't be discouraged. It took me 8 months before I was able to access the online academy;

and I work for MSP fiull-time (civilian).

I am non-MSP personnel, and didn't have any problem getting access to their online academy. Actually, I was very surprised how quick and easy it was. PearlOnyx...I don't have the information in front of me now, but I will send you a PM with the name of the person I dealt with.

Our chief just got the whole dept access to MSP Online Academy. We just received a list of user names and passwords for each officer. There are 28 courses offered and a half dozen still in development.

It was worth the wait. I emailed MSP Sgt Kiley, who is in charge, months ago. He finally emailed me back requesting a letter from my chief to verify identity before access would be granted. When I mentioned it to my chief he said it was in the works and two weeks later, we got access.
