No Free Transponders Now After Batteries Die

BOSTON -- The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has ended the free ride for first-time Fast Lane violators.

In the past, one-time warnings were issued, and drivers who again drove through without the transponder were slapped with a $50 fine.

Under the new policy, which went into effect Monday, first-time violators must pay the toll. A second offense still will result in a $50 fine.

According to an audit issued by State Auditor Joseph DeNucci in 2002, the Turnpike Authority could collect $548,00 a year in unpaid tolls by going after the first-time fast-lane offenders.

The fast-lane program allows transponder users to avoid cash tolls and long lines at tollbooths by paying a monthly bill using a credit card or checking account. The program has about 565,000 customers.

The Turnpike Authority also has changed its policy of giving out free replacement transponders when the unit's batteries die. Drivers with transponders more than three years old now will have to pay $24.61 for a new one.
