any chance the MSP might buy some new Dodge Chargers?

any rumors ?

Greg

The only way the job will buy them is if their $1 cheaper than the Crown Vics. Remember, lowest bid wins. Remember the 95 Chevy's? Thats how we got those.

From what I here the job isn't too happy with the Dodge's they got now anyways (Intrepids). Speaking with the mechanics, it seems they don't like them too much either. Seems to have a lot of problems.

Although I like the idea that Dodge has with the big engine, big wheels, and the power and speed, would seem a perfect fit for highway patrol, however, there's only one problem, it's still a Dodge!! Inferior product, Fords have a proven record and take a good beating.

But now that Ford had some competition again, hopefully they'll start putting out a better product in the future. Wish they still made those Caprice Classics...ahhhh, the good old days.

Well, what do you know... shame on me. Any idea who's getting them? Road guys or units?

Rumor is 1 per troop to the CAT teams.

Posted by: Q5POS

Interesting, do you know if they come with the V-6 or the HEMI?

I heard that they got hemi

I am happy to hear though that the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor will not be discontinued any time soon cause there were some rumors that it might be discountinued in the next few years...this is a letter from the ford fleet offical website

Hal S. Feder 16800 Executive Plaza Drive

Director, N.A. Fleet, Lease and Regent Court Building – 6N494

Remarketing Operations Dearborn, Michigan 48126

April 19, 2006

To: All Ford Motor Company Government Accounts

Subject: Future of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (CVPI)

On January 23, 2006, Ford Motor Company announced the details of our "Way Forward" revitalization plan. "Way Forward" is a sweeping, innovative plan designed to strengthen all Ford operations and ensure we retain our position as America's Car Company. The plan impacts virtually every aspect of our business, including vehicle assembly plants and production capacity.

Since the "Way Forward" announcement, we recognize there has been extensive speculation regarding the future of many Ford products, including the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. The purpose of this letter is to clarify Ford's position on CVPI and ensure you have accurate information. The bottom line:

· Ford Motor Company is committed to the law enforcement community.

· Ford Motor Company will continue to produce the CVPI well into the future.

The CVPI will continue to be assembled at our St. Thomas Assembly Plant. The decision to move to a single shift operation at St. Thomas is designed to smooth the production process and ensure a more consistent product flow. Even with one shift of assembly operations, Ford will have sufficient production to meet all your police car order demands.

The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor remains the only body-on-frame, police car rear crash tested at 75 mph. It has the largest interior space at 109.8 cubic feet and largest trunk at 20.6 cubic feet. It also has exclusive safety options including ballistic door panels and a fire suppression system. While we're confident CVPI is the best police vehicle on the road today, we are also committed to an even better product in the future. To deliver on that commitment, we will make a significant investment in product upgrades over the next several years.

Ford Motor Company built the first police package car in 1950, and has built police cars every year since then. We have the best selling dealership network in the country, and a Ford Fleet sales and service team that can address all your vehicle needs. Ford has a full-line of vehicles: cars, SUVs, vans, wagons, and trucks to help you better serve your communities. Ford Motor Company is the leader in government sales and we plan to stay that way.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call our Fleet Customer Information Center at 1-800-34-FLEET or write Tony Gratson, Government Sales Manager at tgratson@ford.com.

Thank you for purchasing Ford products. If there is anything we can do for you, please let us know.

Sincerely,

Now gentlemen.....there was a time in law enforcement land when Dodge/Plymouth ruled in the arena of cruiser production. Anyone remember the Plymouth Volare, Dodge Aspen, Dodge Coronet, and Plymouth Gran Fury? Aw yes, sweet, powerful memories.

The charger does not meet the bid spec, due to the location of the gear shift lever. Until it is on the steering column or the bid specs change there most likely will not be wide use of the car.

On the police package charger the shifter is on the steering collum its not like the civilian model where there is a floor shifter same with the crown vic on the some of the civilian models the shifter is on the floor.

I got to take a look at a LE only version with the Hemi at the Mass. Chiefs conf last month and I have only two comments: 1) If you've got a laptop planned and you're thinking two man cars you better hope your partner in the passenger seat makes Barney Fife look like Giganto and, 2) You'd better have skinny perps in your state/town/city, cause even with a molded plastic back seat, you're going to have to grease em' up to get them back there. Good luck getting them out.

Posted by: Hartmn

Last I heard there were about 10 (maybe 12) purchased.. half with Hemi's, half without. I believe the Hemi's were for marked road work, and the non hemi's for unmarked use.

Plymouth Gran Fury was my favorite and I was the proud owner of a 77 Dodge Aspen (black with yellow racing srtipes)

Intrepids were a Dodge design, new cars are a design of Daimler Chrysler. (For those of you who dont know, Daimler is Mercedes). Dodge products coming out now are getting better and should have less problems then past models.

Geez, My first car was a 77 aspen as well. I had Dark blue Aspen SE (Luxury model) with the 318 in it. That baby floated down the highway. Ran great, until my trunk rotted out in it one day and I lost my Jumper cables, Oil, Washer fluid, tools and everything else that was in the sides of the trunk

Ironically I can say this, the first car I drove with my friend when I first got my permit was a 77 Dodge Aspen -- Yellow. That was back in 1996. Guess they don't make cars as good as they used to.

Posted by: frank

My Dad had an 1970's Aspen until he spun out on some ice in Lexington and wrapped it around someone's mailbox in the mid 1980s.

The sad thing was after it was totalled he bought a 1980 Dodge Aries and told everyone it was an Aspen.

How about my '78 Aspen winter car Mrs. 40th bought me while I took my '70 Vette off the road? High Performance motoring at its finest! SLANT SIX POWER!!!

Posted by: Blueflu1

My aspen was such a beautiful Tank that I used to jump snowbanks with it in the winter. I would hit 2-3 foot snowbanks with it and jump them, or just plow through them. I could never kill that car, even when I would drive it through small trees when I went off roading with it. lol,

Starter relay went in it, I used to have to pop the hood, and touch a screwdriver between two prongs on the relay. Would spark like a bastard but start. I melted some screwdrivers doing that.

So how did it finally die?

Body finally rotted out too bad. That and it was getting hard to see because the cloth on the roof sagged down and rested on your head. lol The V-8 still ran like a champ though when I got rid of it.

Aspen(Volare')-schmaspen: I had a '69 Valiant Signet with a MoPar 273 CID LA V8 block and an A727 tranny: whup you all day long, and twice on Sunday's...with 350,000 miles. Didn't burn a drop of oil and was pretty good on gas...and had factory Airtemp AC. Bought it for $500.00...it was my go-to-work car (lived in Newton, worked in Cambridge)...and it had its share of "on-purposes", not accidents. Challenge me, back-east bolshie...never lost an insurance claim! I just didn't move. Hit me with your Vulva/Deep sea benz/Pedestrian Motor Werk, genius.

Wanna touch-one-off? I was on my way home from work (eve shift). I had to stop for a red light on Storrow Drive...kid in a Volvo turbo pulls up in the adjacent lane, all revving his mill, etc. The light went green. I arrived at the next red light...when Volvo-boy pulled up, he tried to stay back...so he wouldn't have to look at me. I was on the horn with my window unbuttoned, yelling: "...hey, pal, my car cost $500.00...how much did yours cost?"

The boy wouldn't look at me. The event took place in February, in the Harvard Stadium/Marriott/Sammy White/IHOP area. I always wondered if Mr. Vulva traded his swedish shit spreader for a MoPar...probably not.

Last year at EVOC, the Troopers instructing the the class said that the EVOC guys had just tested the chargers and Magnums. They said they were great, but had concerns for Trooper safety because they were extremely powerful (quick and fast). Not sure what really came of that....

Perhaps if I wrote it in Klingonese, you'd have understood it all...

Maybe it's because you worship bow ties and blue ovals: help is out there...you merely have to recognize your illness: an admission of ignorance is the first step toward learning, Delco/FoMoCo guy!

The truth is out there...Fight the Future.
