A Honolulu Police Department sergeant shot the tire of a stolen pickup truck as the driver tried to escape arrest Tuesday morning, according to officials.
Police on patrol in the Haleiwa area spotted a pickup truck near Matsumoto's Shave Ice a little after 9:30 a.m. and ran the license plate. They found out that it was listed as a stolen car.
An officer found the pickup truck driving on Kamehameha Highway and followed it toward Anahulu Bridge. Another officer approaching from the other direction blocked off the bridge on the Waimea Bay side.
The driver of the stolen pickup truck tried to reverse after seeing the blocked exit to the bridge and collided with the officer behind him. The bumpers locked together and the driver in the stolen vehicle tried to drive off. The sergeant in the vehicle that was hit fired a single shot into the rear left tire, police said.
The occupants of the stolen vehicle, two men and a woman, then surrendered.
Police closed Anahulu Bridge for several hours as they investigated the scene. Traffic was rerouted to the bypass road.
As part of standard procedure after any officer fires a gun, the Honolulu Police Department's Internal Affairs Division is investigating the case and the sergeant is on paid administrative leave.
