Just wanted to know what type of set ups other Campus PD's have for their dispatch.

1) Do you have FT (dedicated) Dispatchers?

2) Do you use Student dispatchers? If yes, are the LEAPS/NCIC Certified? What do you do to ensure proper use of information obtained from LEAPS/NCIC??

3) What type of training do you require for dispatchers?

We have officers only that dispatch. It used to be that if there was a none sworn officer working he/she would sit the desk or if all officers on the shift were sworn the newest guy would sit the desk. Now all FT officers are assigned to dispatch on 2 out of their 5 shifts and Sergeants are assigned to dispatch 1 out of their 5 shifts. Very weird way to do but, whatever. I am a Sgt. and on Sunday nights I will be riding the pine while 2 officers below me will be out on the road.

Why do they make a Sergeant ride the pine? Don't they think it's important for the shift sergeant to be able to respond to any situations requiring their expertise?

Framingham State College Police

0700-1500 1 F/T Dispatcher

1500-2300 Junior man on shift is assigned as the Desk Officer

2300-0700 Junior man on shift is assigned as the Desk Officer

0700-1500 Sat/Sun 1 P/T Dispatcher

We use student workers for non-police window traffic / questions. The student workers are also assigned data entry duties and issue parking passes to visitors / guests.

1: Day shift Mon-Fri has a dedicated disp that is FT, everyone else pending on manpower.

2: I am the only one since 2000

Yes I have full access on Leaps. They don't train unless requested (for disp) and many don't want to, have the length of service, knowledge or how the PD works etc so they have only had a handful to actually become trained. The only application I cannot use that FT employees can is the Registrar's Database because they think that I can somehow figure out how to change my grades/pay tuition or something.

3: In house training from other dispatchers. Not set amount of time but observation then beginning to do it after so many rotations.

Westfield State College utilizes Student Security Officers trained for dispatch on 2nd shift during the week, and 1st and 2nd on the weekends. The only FT dispatcher is on 3rds.
We are trained on LEAPS and Suicide Prevention, for prisoner monitor details and watching them on the booking room TV at dispatch.

Police officers cover dispatch
1 part time student dispatcher
All police officers a leaps certified by myself.
The student dispatcher has only ADMIN functions no password to access cori information. If cori information is needed a officer must use the terminal.

We are down two dispatch positions and will need to hire an IPO in the near future. We hired two cops who are assigned Desk Officer duties and two cops just completed field training. The 1500-2300 shift can run 3 cars on the road and a Desk Officer without overtime.

Bentley uses full-time dispatchers, 2 per shift

We have I full time dispacther on 1500- 2300 shift.
On the 0700-1500 shift it alternartes between all the officers on the shift so everybody does dispatch. 2300-0700 shift is the same way. When our full time dispatcher is off two officer s are assigned to the desk for those two days.

BSC utilizes civilian dispatchers on all shifts. However, the 2nd and 3rd shifts are 9 month employees only. The dayshift dispatcher is 12 months. The DC conducts all training for the dispatchers, putting through some vigorous situations. Result: highly trained and motivated individuals!

I don't know why. This is something new they are trying. I guess they want to give the officers who always ride the pine a chance to get out on the road. I suppose if an "earth-shattering" incident happens I can call one of the officers in and have him sit while I go out.

We have full time dedicated dispatchers for most shifts. Weekend day shifts can be covered by an officer that was hired from the desk or has significant desk training. All dispatchers go through a six week CTO pogram, APCO Basic Telecommunicator 40 hours class, Powerphone LED and EMD classes. All are trained in CPR and Basic First Aid as well.

Do you certify your student dispatchers on LEAPS/NCIC??

What problems to you see with this?

WPI Police has three full-time civilian dispatchers, and a small group of part-timers (some of which are students).

All dispatchers (including students) are LEAPS/NCIC certified. However, only sworn personnel receive BOP access.
