Should Boston School Police Officer Be Able To Carry Firearms,, what kind of power do they have or are they just security with the word police on them

Posted by: rg1283

As far as I know they are Boston Special Police Rule 400. Some might have the P/I academy. I think its common sense that anyone manning a metal detector (as they are in some schools) should be armed. Your obviously not looking for pocket change........ As far as them being armed, they are currently not armed.

Posted by: Irish Wampanoag

I think the Boston school police want to merge with the state police

Posted by: rg1283

Wrong they want to merge with the Environmental Police. Cross of the ENVIRO part on the Cruisers so it says MENTAL POLICE, then in turn CMPSA will come in and merge them into one big force. Call the House of Rock Police.

Posted by: dh18

Doesn't the Boston School Police have Deputy Sheriff powers and belong to MetroLEC?

Posted by: k12kop

To answer romio's question BSP is under rule 400, so arrest powers and all to keep the thugs and bangers in line. As far as them getting armed you got to keep in mind that we are School Dept. operated so don't hold your breath on it. We deal with the same issues any street cop deals with day in day out in the schools....with less.

The schools and colleges that have police departments and don't provide them with the proper equipment to perform their job, firearms specifically, just don't get it. Now, I understand that in the super liberal world of education that firearms don't project that warm and fuzzy feeling they want everyone to get. Just an example of how the more someone is trapped in that education world, the less common sense they seem to have !!!!

Cudos to the schools/colleges/universites that do things right. But if the school or institution is in a high crime area, has gang members attending, a large population in a small area with alcohol/drugs and sex crimes having the most potential for issues to arise (hard to argue about the last not applying to most colleges) they should have all the options to protect themselves and others. Have these school administrators forgotten about Columbine and all the other similar school shootings, by kids even in elementary school. Do college higer ups think that can't happen with adults? BS!! I remember a college officer being killed in the line of duty recently (Indiana I believe).

Bottom line, let the police worry about what equipment they need and school big wigs worry about teaching. Another example of people that don't have a clue about our jobs thinking they know best. We do policing, you do teaching...keep it that way.

But I hear they do a great job giving those gang-bangers a good tuning up as needed.

Brockton School Police are armed and attend the full-time academy.

Oh jesus here we go your stupid little frustrated comments. Hey I know where I stand in the echo system of law enforcement. You however are one of those crusty little red faced scorned cops in a small hick town, in which you are too embarrass to say because like a lot of members of this site have no balls only on your chin, who's biggest crime is to arrest the Gatlin brothers for smoking pot behind their house trailer.

Nice run-on sentence. Go back to grammer school and learn how to communicate.

As far as Boston School Police is concerned, we have a tough job to do being in the schools with those kids. It's kind of like being a CO with the exception that you get to go outside once in a while to chase someone. Everyday we are taking knives off of kids. Many of the buildings have side doors and windows that kids will sneak in drugs and weapons. The metal detectors deter some of the weapons, but if they want to get a weapon into the building it's not very difficult. We're handcuffed by the school committee and the rest of the school department because school budget money is spent on buses, flat screen monitors, laptops and huge salaries; instead of protecting all these high priced items and the safety of the school population. (did I mention that there are constantly high priced electronics being stolen from the schools, and that they are being stolen by people who have keys to get into these rooms/offices/cabinets?) Guns would be difficult in the schools because you are constantly in the hallway rush during class change, and it is close quarters. However, dismissal time invites trespassers from all over the city, some of which are gang related because they want to find their next victim. Also working sporting events invites the outside element. Guns could be in the future, but unfortunately only after a tragedy.

They don't need the city to give them guns. They just get them from the kids in school.

It's pretty ridiculous that cops in Mass. (school police, campus police, etc.) don't carry firearms.ALL COPS here in Nevada go to a full time police academy and carry firearms,OC,baton, etc. The only thing they don't have that Metro officers have is Tasers. The Clark County (Las Vegas) School Police Dept.here have over 160 officers and are fully trained and sworn PO's.They have patrol cars, detectives, bike patrol, even a gang unit. They're hiring too.

Romio-
I don't know if you got fired from BSP or if you just couldn't get hired, but that would be probably be the only reason for your bitterness. You call us wanna be's, most of us would love to be a Boston Police Officer. We have more legitimate arrests than most towns outside of Boston. We take more guns of the streets/out of the schools than most departments outside of Boston. I'm sorry you get the impression that we are just security guards, I guess maybe you should do some research and you'll see that we have specialty units such as RAD, Gang Intelligence, DARE, Drug Intel etc etc.
In your little world we should go to WalMart and buy one of those packages that includes a replica badge, plastic handcuffs (with a plastic key), and don't forget that plastic whistle. Then we can bring them in our imaginary cruiser to the fake Boston Police station, as we play dress up and go through the booking process. Plus it's always nice when they invite us to the court so that we can pretend that we are testifying. Luckily I get my gold star sticker to put on my uniform when I leave so that I know I did a good job.
Romio, do some research tonight while you're working at naratoone or which ever security company that you work at. Maybe one day you can shadow one of our officers so that you can see what it's like to take weapons off of someone. Especially when you're unarmed. Until then I don't want to hear a thing from someone who is so uninformed that make our elementary school students seem more intelligent.

Brockton School PO'po's are a F@*#ing joke. They should not be armed, for they are dangerous in their incompetance as humans, let alone as police officers.

I can think of 3 right now, on the job, who are there because they can't handle being a regular patrol officer.

And one of them, I will say, assigned to North Jr High, has a penchant for assaulting and harrassing female students and their parents. He even chased one mother down in his G-R-E-A-T mobile, and threatened to arrest her if she didn't apologize to his girlfriend for asking her to move her car, as she was blocking the exit.

They absolutely should not be armed, not while in the schools. If they are working a detail somewhere, go for it, but not while they are a danger to my kid.

Boston School Police are around during vacation weeks and summer. There are Summer School Programs, MCAS programs and other people who will get permits to use the buildings. We are trying to create units/programs so that we become more visible during the Summer. But that would require money and we are told that there isn't any money.
I don't know very much about Brockton School Police, but from what I do know their department isn't operated like Boston. It has fewer schools and fewer officers because of the difference in size between the cities. All I know is that they have more overtime and make more money than Boston.
Boston School Police should be more self-sufficient and hopefully things will change as people realize that the officers aren't protected properly.

Brockton Schoolies are around all year, they patrol the school properties.

They are supervised by Peter Judge of the school department, the guy who supervises the busses and transportation......

Makes all the sense in the world!

Apparently they made it through the FT academy. I can see them having a couple of nuts -- everyone has them... but the whole dept.? I doubt it. You sound bitter. And it's the schools fault that the Transportation guys is in charge of School PO's.
