RIVERSIDE (April 11, 2006) - Riverside County Sheriff Bob Doyle wants the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to train his deputies on immigration laws in an effort to deport all undocumented felons. Related Links
The Riverside County Board of Supervisors will consider a request today from Doyle to sign an agreement with Homeland Security to allow deputies to perform certain functions of an immigration officer.
The board meets at 9 a.m. at the County Administrative Center, 4080 Lemon St.
In a report to the board, Doyle said he wants deputies to assist federal officers, including in the "interrogation of persons believed to be aliens and completion of required criminal alien processing."
If the agreement is approved, deputies will take pictures, fingerprints and prepare affidavits regarding undocumented immigrants who have committed felonies, according to the report.
Once the inmate's case is adjudicated, he or she will be deported. Inmates also will not be eligible for bail or to be released on their own recognizance.
"To me, it's important that we're not releasing folks back into our community, regardless of where they're from," Doyle told The Desert Sun in an interview.
There is an estimated 233,000 undocumented immigrants in Riverside County, where the jails have been at capacity since 2002, and about 12 million nationwide.
Doyle wants to take advantage of a provision of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 allowing local law agencies to provide enforcement of immigration laws at its jails.
Approval of the agreement would allow the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, to provide four weeks of training to sheriff's deputies.
Riverside County has a May deadline to commit to the training sessions or will have to wait until the next fiscal year, according to Doyle's report to the board.
