The company that owns a Papillion Applebee's restaurant has placed a number of employees on unpaid leave in connection with the possible methamphetamine poisoning of two sheriff's deputies last month.
Neither Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis nor a spokesman for Applebee's would say how many employees were suspended at the restaurant where the deputies ate lunch.
Davis said the company took action based on the results of the ongoing investigation.
The suspended employees are not necessarily suspects but may have information useful to the investigation, he said. Police have interviewed them "at least once, and we're not finished with them yet," he said.
J.S. Ventures, franchise owner of the restaurant, placed the employees on leave earlier this week, according to a press release from the company.
The female Sarpy County sheriff's deputies became nauseated and disoriented after eating lunch March 12 at the restaurant, 1202 N. Washington St.
One deputy tested positive for meth. Both deputies had exhibited meth-related symptoms, authorities said. Authorities ruled out intentional drug use by the deputies.
To assist in the investigation, police initially asked management not to suspend any employees, Davis said.
"It would have helped Applebee's business operations to have suspended these employees earlier, but at our request, they waited for our direction on this matter," he said.
Davis confirmed the company's statement that none of the employees currently working at the restaurant are involved in the investigation.
He said he's confident the restaurant is doing everything possible to ensure the quality of its food.
"I ate there," Davis said, "and I wouldn't hesitate to eat there again."
The deputies appear to have fully recovered from the incident, authorities say.
