Judge reduces bail in witness intimidation case

MILFORD -- A judge returned bail money yesterday for two teens accused of threatening a witness in the Daniel Columbo murder investigation.
Milford District Court Judge Robert Calagione reduced bail from $10,000 to $5,000 for Zachary McQuilkin, 17, of 170 Mechanic St., Upton, on a charge of witness intimidation.
Calagione also returned $1,500 to Richard Barr, the father of Justin Barr, 17, of 61 Fruit St. Ext., Apt. B, Milford. The younger Barr remains in custody because he did not post the full $15,000 bail imposed at his arraignment.

Barr was also scheduled to be arraigned on four counts of vandalizing property yesterday, but ended up entering his pleas before Judge Robert Gardner Friday. Court papers show he is accused of spray painting the letters DSG -- which police say stands for Depot Street Gang -- at Memorial Middle School, a brick building and the bleachers at the Town Park, a Dumpster and a building at Fino Field and property belonging to the Music Nook on Main Street.
Barr and McQuilkin, another alleged Depot Street Gang member who faces similar vandalism charges, were initially arrested March 17 and charged with witness intimidation. Police alleged they followed a witness in the Jan. 6 murder of 21-year-old Daniel Columbo through town, then Barr called the witnesses’ friends on their cell phones and threatened the witness.
Through their court-appointed attorney at arraignment, Barr and McQuilkin argued the threats were not about the murder, but a dispute about the witness dating Barr’s sister.
McQuilkin was charged with several vandalism counts after he posted the original $10,000 bail that week.
Elvin Santana, 17, of 10 Depot St., Milford, was also charged with vandalism for graffiti. Police also allege he belongs to the Depot Street Gang, along with another youth. Barr and McQuilkin both return to court April 24.
