A police officer fatally shot Kerry Robinson after a brief chase in northwest Jacksonville on Thursday.
The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of West 30th and Almeda streets.
According to authorities, a violent incident between Robinson and a woman led police to pursue Robinson.
When Robinson attempted to elude officers by jumping fences and running through back yards and firing shots at the officers, Officer Terrence Reed opened fire and fatally wounded the man, according to police.
Witnesses told Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer they heard four shots.
"I saw a blue car this car and I saw a lot of police," witness Idella Patterson said. "After a while I heard some shots and I jumped up on my crutches to get my children to bring them in the house."
Investigators have not commented on how many shots were fired, but said the officer had no choice but to shoot.
Police say Reed, a 15-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, was not injured. He was placed on administrative leave, with is standard proceedure after a police-involved shooting.
Records show Robinson had a long history of arrests, including charges of aggravated assault, drug possession and DUI.
