Main Page NYPD Says Iraq Vets Owe Money

(CBS) ROCKY POINT He proudly displays the flag outside his new home in Rocky Point, Long Island. But right now Officer Duane Johnson is wondering how he's going to pay for it.

“It says: Welcome Home Soldier, so grateful that you served...You owe 5,319 dollars within 30 days.”

The welcome home letter, which Duane recently received, is from the NYPD. Duane was a city cop from 1997 to 2003.

During that time he was called to active duty out, of the 106 Air National Guard, Westhampton, and deployed overseas in 2002.

Officer Duane Johnson says, “I really don't know what to do, it's five-thousand dollars. I just bought a house, I just got married and I don't have five-thousand-dollars around. I just served my country, just came back from Africa and Kuwait before that.”

Duane is now a Suffolk. County Sheriff Correction Officer, assigned to the Riverhead Jail. But New York City is challenging the months in 2002 when Duane served overseas and got both a stipend from the military and a paycheck from the NYPD, saying that was double-dipping and now it suddenly wants the money returned.

Officer Duane Johnson, “I used all my vacation time in a swap, I went through all my records, and I would like to see where I owe this money.

It's just a shame that the city is really screwing all these veterans that are coming back. Four-years later, you're getting a bill.”

The NYPD said the bill should come as no surprise. Lots of soldier/officers are in the same boat. They sign waivers when they go to war.

The city will look into whether Officer Johnson gave up vacation to erase the debt.

The NYPD notified us late today that they all ready spoke to officer Johnson sent him paperwork, and urged him to come in to discuss his situation. What he owes may be LESS than the five thousand that appears on the bill. They await his reply.

If City employees didn't sign the agreement, they would lose ALL benefits and seniority during the deployment. Tricare is what the military offers in regards to medical coverage - in a word - horrendous. We were far better off with the City insurance coverage. We were given one week prior to mobilization, in the midsts of the chaos, for my husband to sign his papers prior to his deployment to OIF III with the NYARNG. There's more to this story and our issues than can be printed here.

Net base pay for a 5+ yr police officer in the NYPD is around $1300 every two weeks. Now combine that pay with their low military pay and we're not talking about cops, firemen, sanitation workers and correction officers walking away with millions of dollars. Families needed to survive. This story is about to get worse than $5,000. They're going to start looking for 18 months of pay from hundreds of soldiers.
