Anyone out there independent? and hows it working. what are the pros and cons

Pros:
Autonomy / local control
No wasting money on national issues of little importance on the local level
You can focus your resources on issues of importance to you & set your own agenda
Better Value (you generally get more for your money)

Cons:
Sometimes difficult with small units (because of 'economies of scale' principles) unless you're affiliated with a statewide labor organization
Requires more work from the Executive Board (record keeping, accounting, operations, etc..)
You don't get to go to a union convention somewhere nice

Pros: If your rank and file have their sh$%t together, then this offers a great way to save a few bucks. Govern yourselves with autonomy.

Cons: There are no cons, if as I said your rank and file are united and knowledgeable about all the protections/benefits afforded you as a union. then you should do very well on the road to independence. Make sure you hire a reputable lawyer/law firm. read the contract from top to bottom.

Weakness begets failure. what I mean. If your rank and file are out to lunch then the cons are too many to list.
