Who are you? Rodney Dangerfield?

It looks like someone asking a legitimate question, looking for a legitimate answer.

Billerica classifies them as Specials. They go through the Reserve/Intermittant academy. They have their own cruiser and they do work details in town. I believe that they do carry firearms as well.

This is what I know of the Billerica Aux. They do carry firearms and get sent to the reserve/intermittent academy. They also have a couple of cruisers for patrolling town property only. They've only started patrolling over the last year or two from my understanding. Billerica Aux. DOES NOT fall under the Billerica P.D. they fall under Emergency Management. They are NOT Specials (as far as I know) because they fall under Emergency Management. They're badges even state emergency management also.
As far as being respected...well It's probably about 60/40..against them from the full timers. The community respects and appreciated the work that they do such as Sunday church traffic etc.
They have to pay for ALL of they're uniforms and equipment which becomes pretty costly. BUT..they do get a lot of good and useful certifyable training for free. Not a bad place if you have the time or $$$. A good stepping stone to start. But that is just one person's opinion. Hope that this info helps!!

They typically work sundays to do church traffic, unpaid, and do carry...they had a few older cruisers unless they have gotten some newer used models handed down from BPD...good starting place if you need someone to sponsor you for the reserve academy...

We just had a guy leave us to go there. Apparently is a pretty decent Department.

Respect for an Auxiliary Department...whats that?

They carry firearms, but are NOT specials? interesting...

Billerica Aux. has 4-5 cruisers, 2 vans and 4 trek bikes. They are armed and the guy who runs the show over there is big into training. Lee is retired from the BPD and use to teach at the reserve/in. academy. I am a Full Time officer in Billerica and I would say the respect is more like 60/40 in favor of having them around. They patrol of friday and saturday night (schools, parks and other town property). They are armed and you do have to pay for your uniforms and equipment. The owner of Police Survival in Billerica is the chief of the aux and will help you out with equipment and payment plan. Billerica Aux. is a great place to start I personally know of 4-5 guys who were officers there and have been appointed full time somewhere over the last three years.

Thanks guys, I talked with the chief and he said to come over and fill out an app. BPD do you know how the hiring process goes?

Also does anyone know how much PT is in the R/I academy?

Zero PT in the R/I Academy.

Ahh, good old Lee S. He was a treat at NERPI in '97 (Last class in Tewksbury)

Not always true, depends on where you go... not comparable to a full-time academy program, but then again, the whole R/I academy itself is a different animal.

And to clarify for some who may be confused, Billerica has both Specials (paid, armed, details only) and Auxilary (volunteer, armed, described above)

Something you lost out in when you left us in good ol' 'Chersterville for Slummerville....ass! How's those butterbars treatin' ya???

P/T in the R/I academy, I find that VERY hard to believe. The P/T is a joke in the F/T academy, don't try to sell that bag of crap.

i went through the process of applying because the chief said they got paid details, and were a proactive dept. i went in for a few meetings, you have to show up every fri, sat night or every other fri, sat, night or have a good reason for not shoing up. the last sunday of the month is manditory triaing day, you are required to show up for every parade, town function etc. On fri and sat night you patrol a school parking lot and a cemetary. you cant make stops or anything like that you can only observe and relay information to the Billerica police dept. You will need to spend about 5oo bucks on gear/uniforms etc you cary your own gun its got to be 9mm or 40 cal only. you dont need academy or any thing just sign up. Most people there dont have the academy( kinda odd!) if you want the academy, you have to be there for 6 months and they will sign you application but you will have to pay your won way. its easier just to call a few police depts. and ask for a sponsor. As for me when i got there, there was no paid details, there was no Specials it was not what i looking for, Plus they expect a lot of your time.... so i just kept applying to real depts. Every one is very nice i will add. good luck hope this helps. P.s the Chief owns the uniform store $$$$ Profit!!

The Billerica Police Department is a squared away, professional,no nonsense police department. I am sure the Auxies have to be up to or close to their standards as far as Auxies go. You gotta start somewhere and sometimes take some financial hits such as uniform and equipment costs.
Always remember whatever uniform you wear, Stand proud in it and make sure it is squared away, and your squared away and you will be allright.

The Auxi Chief is retired Bill P.D. and is a good guy.
