Foxboro police taking 'prank' seriously

By David Linton/Sun Chronicle Staff

FOXBORO -- Pine trees that were chopped down at Foxboro High School, then stacked in a classroom, might have begun as a senior prank, but now it's a criminal investigation.

Foxboro Police Chief Edward O'Leary said Friday police are investigating the case as a break-in and vandalism.
The incident was discovered Wednesday, and O'Leary said he suspects high school students were responsible.

`` We're in the process of meeting with school authorities and investigating the matter,'' O'Leary said.

Police have interviewed some potential suspects but no one had been charged Friday with any crime, the police chief said.

Pine trees on school grounds were cut down, then were dragged into an unlocked classroom and positioned upright to make the room look like a forest, O'Leary said.
Investigators have not determined if a particular teacher was targeted or if the classroom was just an opportunity for the vandals.

O'Leary said it was too early to determine whether felony or misdemeanor charges would be filed, but police are taking the matter seriously.

`` I wouldn't call it a prank. I never think what some call senior pranks are that at all,'' O'Leary said.

`` Young people tend to look at it as a prank, and not a violation of the law,'' he said. `` There are consequences when you break the law.''

Officer Timothy O'Leary, the police department's school resource officer, is working with school administrators in the investigation.

The police chief said he did not know when the investigation would be wrapped up.
