DARTMOUTH — Friends of Dartmouth police Officer David Mello, who was paralyzed in a car accident in November, are holding a fundraiser to help his family with expenses.
Lt. Ken Cotta, one of the organizers, said people have a chance to win a 2006 Harley Davidson Road King Classic, a Kawasaki 900 STX Jet Ski or a seven-night Royal Caribbean cruise.
Tickets cost $100 each and organizers have limited sales to 1,000 tickets.
The drawing for the three prizes will be held as part of a fundraiser at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hawthorne Country Club. Music will be provided by disc jockey Gene Daniels.
"Sales have been brisk so far. There are tickets left, and we expect to have some for sale on the night of the raffle," Lt. Cotta said.
"We have $30,000 worth of prizes between the three items. They will get three bites of the apple instead of just one."
In addition to the raffle for the three big prizes, there will be a Chinese auction and a smaller auction of gift certificates, services and gift baskets that local merchants have donated.
"The business community has been very generous," Lt. Cotta said.
Officer Mello, 46, was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Nov. 26 at Russells Mills Road and George Street. The 12-year veteran of the department had just finished working the midnight to 8 a.m. shift and was heading home to change and return to the station to work a four-hour shift when the accident occurred.
Officer Mello is home now, although there is no change in his medical condition.
He remains paralyzed from the neck down and on a ventilator from the spinal cord injury.
Lt. Cotta said Dartmouth officers will be at the Dartmouth Mall every night this week until 9 p.m., selling tickets for the fundraiser. The officers will be stationed near the mall's customer service desk at Filene's inside entrance.
The officers also are selling support wristbands for $5.
"We're there to have a good time, raise some money for David and meet old friends," Lt. Cotta said.

You couldn't meet a nicer guy. He'd do anything for you. This is a real tragedy. Before joining Dartmouth PD he was a full time CPO at UMASS Dartmouth.
