Firearms training in the R/I Academy?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Hi all, just had the first night of the R/I Academy. Just had a question, on the MPTC website it states that reserve officers must qualify to the same firearms requirements as fulltime officers. Does this mean once you get out of the academy, or are they supposed to go through all that at the academy? The course schedule doesn't have anything in it about firearms. Just me being curious... thanks for any info!

You wont see, touch or hear a firearm in the R/I academy, you will probably qualify once you get hired on a dept.

Boylston R/I. And I say again , we did not hear touch or see a firearm while we were there.

Absolutely correct. Firearms training is not part of the MPTC R/I curriculum.
It is the responsibility of the hiring department.

You will absolutely NOT deal with any firearm training in the r/i academy. If you start working for a PD after you graduate you will be required to qualify with the dept issued firearm (and this would be the PD's responsibility).

The full time academy has a full 40 hours of firearm training at the range and usually another 8 hour day of firearms nomenclature.

Thanks all for the replies, I appreciate the information. I sort of figured that was the way it was done, but then it sort of seemed like something you might get in the R/I Academy. Anyways, I like to know how things work and when you will receive certain types of training, better to ask a fairly obvious question than to be guessing the whole time you go through the process. Thanks again!

Future,

I went to R/I at Norwood about 5 years ago, and First Responder, Baton, OC, and Firearms were all not included. They passed around a roster during class to sign up for these "extras", and you paid an additional fee and took the course with an outside instructor on the weekends. I was already qualified through my department at the time, but I ended up going through training with the second department I was working for, rather than the outside training offered through R/I.

the CPR and First responder was not a part of the academy, but they did provide instructors, at a very reasonable rate..
$30.00/CPR
$60.00/First Responder

I think that is should be included, but, what do i know

It would be easier for the students if it was included but..... they are dealing with a limited amount of time to cover as much as possible. Seeing as how most departments have ( or should have a firearms officer/instructor ) and CPR/FR instructors are not that hard to find,
the academy hours are used for other content.

That is correct about the no First responder, CPR, First Aid, OC, Baton. It used to be offered until recently i believe. Which pisses me off Since i paid 450 for the friggen class and now i have to make some shady deals inorder to get my baton and first responder from the instructors. The only real hands on training you get is defensive tactics and even that is kinda a waste since you dont spend more then 3 hrs on a given tactic. All we did was throw some punches and then we practiced handcuffing for the rest of the classes.
