Dealer’s infant ingests cocaine

By Milton J. Valencia TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

WORCESTER—
The 9-month-old daughter of a convicted drug dealer was hospitalized late Wednesday night after she somehow ingested cocaine in a case that triggered the involvement of the state Department of Social Services.

The DSS has taken custody of the infant, a spokeswoman said yesterday. And in the meantime, the police are investigating how she ingested the cocaine. Her father is a convicted drug dealer who was arrested on outstanding warrants just hours before the baby was hospitalized, police said.

Police detectives learned yesterday that the baby was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus, at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after family members thought she looked lethargic. A medical examination later showed she had digested cocaine, police Sgt. Gary J. Quitadamo said yesterday.

Denise Monteiro, a spokeswoman for DSS, said that the baby was listed in good condition yesterday at UMass Memorial. There was serious concern Wednesday, however, when the baby was in critical condition and reportedly had suffered seizures.

Ms. Monteiro said her agency was notified of the cocaine ingestion, and sought court approval yesterday morning to take temporary custody of the infant. Once she recovers, the baby will be referred to another family member or perhaps a foster parent, but will remain under DSS care “until we can find out what’s going on,” Ms. Monteiro said.

Earlier in the evening Wednesday, the baby was at 30 Lakeside Ave., Apt. 2, where the mother and father were visiting friends, police said. At about 7:30 p.m., officers with the police gang unit arrived at the apartment to serve an arrest warrant for the baby’s father, Jose Gonzalez.

Mr. Gonzalez, 32, of 4 Park Ave. Place, Apt. 2, was arrested on five outstanding default warrants for violation of probation on 2004 drug charges, including two counts of possession of heroin with intent to distribute, two counts of possession of crack cocaine and a drug violation within a school zone.

He was ordered held without bail yesterday for probation violation. He also had outstanding warrants for defaulting in court on motor vehicle violations. A hearing on the alleged probation violation was continued to April 5.
