BILLERICA, Mass. --A Tewksbury police officer is being treated for a gunshot wound in the leg following a pursuit that began in that town and ended in Billerica.

Police say the officer's injuries are not life threatening. They also say a suspect is in custody, but are providing no other details.

Broadcast reports say the chase began at around 11 a.m. after the alleged hold-up of a Mobil gas station in on Route 133 in Tewksbury. It ended several miles later in a crash near a cemetery on Andover Road in Billerica.

The officer was reportedly taken to Leahy Clinic for treatment.

My old hometown... I hope the officer will recover without any enduring issues.
Watching the News coverage; Al Donovan is a really good chief. From what I've heard from my friends who are cops in Tewksbury, he's a cops cop.....

Man Arrested After Police Officer Suffers Gunshot Wound

Suspect To Face Charges Thursday

6:54 pm EST March 1, 2006

BOSTON -- A Tewksbury police officer was treated for a gunshot wound Wednesday following a police pursuit that ended in Billerica.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that the incident began at about 11 a.m. after an alleged robbery at a Mobil gas station on Route 133 in Tewksbury. Police said that Joseph Croteau stormed into the gas station and stole an undisclosed amount of money.

A gas station employee called the police, who chased Croteau into Billerica, where he crashed his van.

"The suspect exited the vehicle, refused to surrender. A short struggle ensued during which a firearm was discharged. A Tewksbury officer received a non-life threatening would to the leg," Billerica Police Department Chief Daniel Rosa said.

The officer, Brian O'Neil, 24, was shot with his own gun. Croteau, of Lowell, was taken into custody, police said.

"Right now, the preliminary reports are that (O'Neil) handled himself in a professional manner. It's a superficial wound, and we are happy that he is going to be OK," Tewksbury Police Department Chief Al Donovan said.

Croteau is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Lowell District Court. Copyright 2006 by TheBostonChannel. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Was working today and heard the whole thing over the radio. There's nothing worse than hearing over the air that an officer has been shot. Looks like everyone is going to be OK.

That Scumbag looks like a big dude.

You've got that right! I've heard that saying, "Officer needs help, officer down" too many times in my career. Those words will definitely send shivers down your spine. And then to arrive at the scene and see a brother or sister officer down........ Not a good thing.

Best wishes to the Tewksbury officer.

From what I've heard from my friends who are cops in Tewksbury, he's a cops cop.....

I don't know Koz? Where I come from;

A cops cop doesn't make his guys punch time clocks and write reports when their punching in or out is "improper".

A cops cop doesn't install GPS in cruisers and then disciplines guys for being in one place five minutes too long or going too fast on the highway to back another guy up on the midnight shift...

A cops cop doesn't forget where he came from and the things he used to do that made the job fun and he surely doesn't forget the guys who came up with him....

A cops cop doesn't pass himself off as a internal affairs expert by teaching a class for other brass when his real internal affairs expertise came from battling with an administration as union president and thinking of new and innovative ways to screw with his own men like lab rats.

Check again with your peeps Koz...I think you might find that this PD is quite demoralized. In fact it has become a sick joke in many communities about some of the ordeals those guys have been put through by a guy who was one of the most radical union presidents ever and who used to be quite a cops cop. Its actually gotten to a point where you hear every few months "Have you heard about the poor Tewksbury guy?"...In fact I bet he will discipline this poor kid for going into the scrum with his holster unsnapped...We all know it happens and it's preventable but it happens.. Saying that the kid acted "in a professional manner" to me doesn't sound too bad but it's not a cop's cop statement. I am glad he's OK and believe me this cat that they tangled with had no business being on the street anyways but thats a whole separate issue.

I was involved in this incident. I was about 7 feet from the suspect when the shot was fired. I am also the officer that update the ambulance with "officer down, we have an officer shot". As scary it is to hear that it is just as scary to say it. Officer O'Neal was talking and awake while at the scene. It appeared to me to be wound that he will recover from and return to work. He will be in pain and have a rehab ahead of him but my prayers go out to him and his family. The two Billerica officers were treated and released at different hospitals. One of those officers is back to work. Anyone who has been involved in that situation knows how scary it really is but everyone there did a great job.

RP - you obviously speak from experience, and I wouldn’t question your sincerity or accuracy. My comment was based on passing conversations with guys I’ve known for years and by a few detail officers that I have come to meet over the last few years (at the corner of Hill and Main if you catch my drift) during blood drives and other functions. If my comments irritated you or any line officers it certainly wasn't my intention. And after all, this isn’t the thread for anything less that support for the injured officer, I shouldn’t have even mentioned it.

I think they were messing with you Kozmo, RP speaks the truth.

No Koz I wasn't being sarcastic or trying to start a fire nor was I being wise....It's for real.

Anyhow, it's his ship and he can run it how he wants but there's a lot of undue pressure from within on those guys there and it's a shame. I know it's taking a toll on them and when I saw him on TV I couldn't help but thinking that this kid was going to get jammed up...Personally from what I understand that the kid redeemed himself in that pile pretty good by never giving up and when the gun went off he still had his hands over it so it jammed...I also understand that the shitbag was still trying to pull the trigger when they pried the gun out of his hand..So in short the kid made up for it.

Posted by: alphadog1

Tewksbury carries Glocks...so your theory with the safety goes out the window.

As Mr. Croteau not being a scum bag, I beg to differ. His entire family are scum and have been stealing & robbing in the greater Lowell area. Enjoy your visits at the state pen!!

You're a douchbag.

And so's your old man.

Alpha, three more years and the whelp will be eligible to join his family...in jail:

Citizen: "Hey, jsimolaris, I haven't seen you in a while...where have you been?"

Jsimolaris: "I was at my family reunion."

Citizen: "Where did you have your family reunion?"

Jsimolaris: "Cedar Junction...5 to 10...years."

Tell me this if it was your father on the other end would you still say the robber was not a scum bag/ douche bag? Just do us all a favor and be NOTHING like your douche bag father. Just because your father is a pathetic looser doesn't mean you have to be. Work hard in and out of school and make something of your self. Prove to your dad that just because you aren't going to have the greatest childhood doesn't mean you have to be a fuck up. Good luck.

No, we get off on making fun of dicks like you.

At the park everyday? Another life unencumbered by gainful employment or the pursuit of improvement. When was the last time you went to the library and read a book, loser? Yeah, I know, the doctor says for you not to read more than 5 minutes at a time because it puts a strain on your lips.

...and someone with no life still has a better gig than dear old Dad.

UPDATE. GREAT NEWS............

Man pleads guilty in wounding of Tewksbury officerBy Alexandra Mayer-Hohdahl, amayer-hohdahl@lowellsun.com
Lowell SunArticle Last Updated:
LOWELL -- A Lowell man who was called a "one-man crime spree" by one prosecutor will spend the next decade in jail, after he pleaded guilty Thursday in the shooting of a Tewksbury police officer last year.
Joseph Croteau, a 31-year-old career criminal who previously resided at 1337 Pawtucket Boulevard, admitted guilt to 20 charges from malicious destruction of property to armed assault with intent to murder. Croteau sentenced to 12 years in state prison and four years probation.
Croteau had led police on a high-speed chase through Tewksbury and Billerica on March 1, 2006 before losing control of his van and hitting a telephone poll near the Fox Hill Cemetery in Billerica.
After climbing out of the van's window, Croteau was tackled by 24-year-old Tewksbury police officer Brian O'Neill and his partner, Officer Douglas Pratt. During the struggle, Croteau gained control of O'Neill's gun and fired. The bullet entered O'Neill's upper thigh and exited right above his knee. Croteau also plead guilty yesterday to four robberies, including the one at a Mobil on the Run in Tewksbury that spurred the police chase. Defense attorney Keren Goldenberg said yesterday that Croteau had turned to crime to support a drug habit that stretched back to his teenage years.
