The Vermont House has rejected a proposal that would have required judges to sentence people convicted of certain sex crimes to a minimum term in prison.
The House voted 82-50 against the proposal, largely along party lines.
Opponents argued that the proposal could lead to fewer people serving time in prison because it would lead to more trials. Experts say suspects would be less likely to plea bargain because they would face at least three years in prison for lewd and lascivious conduct with a child and sexual assault, and five years for aggravated sexual assault.
Experts also said trials make convictions much less certain, jeopardizing a chance that a suspect would serve any prison time.
