46-Year-Old Walking Her Dog Fell Off Sea Wall

NEWPORT, R.I. -- A Newport police officer pulled a woman from frigid ocean water early Wednesday morning, possibly saving her life.

Police said the 46-year-old woman was walking her dog when she fell off a sea wall and into the water. Authorities did not release the woman's name, but said she had been drinking wine with friends.

According to authorities, patrol Officer Robert Caruolo heard the woman shouting around 2:15 a.m. while he was parked at the city's gas station.

Walking along the waterline, he spotted the woman trying to crawl out of the water near a boat ramp. Caruolo ran into the 39 degree water and pulled the woman out.

Her body temperature was 75 degrees, 23 degrees below normal.

Doctors said the woman is expected to survive.
