An Illinois Senate panel has approved a bill that would honor those who served in Iraq with commemorative license plates.

The Senate Transportation Committee voted 9-0 to advance a bill that would create “Iraqi Freedom” license plates for personal vehicles. However, an amendment offered by the bill’s sponsor, Senate Minority Leader Frank Watson, R-Greenville, would modify the plates to read “Support Our Troops.”

A portion of the fee to obtain the commemorative plate would be used for veterans’ assistance. The measure would also restrict the governor’s office from using the money generated from the plate sale for other uses, The Quad-City Times reported.

The plate would cost $40 to purchase and $27 for renewal. Twenty-five dollars of that amount would be used for financial and education aid to children of veterans who died or were disabled while serving.

The bill – SB2130 – has been sent to the full Senate for further consideration.

A separate bill offered by Sen. Deanna Demuzio, D-Carlinville, would create “Support Our Troopers” license plates to fund the Illinois State Police.

The plate would cost $40 to purchase and $27 for renewal. Twenty-five dollars of that amount would be deposited into the state police vehicle fund.

Demuzio’s bill – SB2837 – passed the Senate Transportation Committee on a 6-4 vote and has been forwarded to the full Senate.
