Level II National Park Service Law Enforcement Commission. Its a seasonal LE commission for the BLM, NPS or . You'd need to complete a course of instruction at an approved school (UMASS-Amherst has such a program) and be appointed.

The DOI will soon be phasing the Level II commission (per the rumor mill). They will be starting centralized hiring like every other federal agency.

JoninNH, thought you were going to get into that last class at Amherst???

Some changes at my full time job made it impossible to schedual it, and I've since accepted an part-time police position out-of-state. Whats the time table on DOI phasing out the Level II's... since I don't have my bachelor's it'd be one of the only ways I'd get a federal appointment.

Not sure if ya interested. But, anyone that wants "in" the Federal system; its through the Bureau of Prisons at Devens. They are considered federal law enforcement and get the LE pay plus 20% locality pay. And like most corrections jobs they always need bodies. Its a great way to get your GS rating, then move on from there if you like. With a degree you may qualify with GS-6 walking in the door.

They said 2007...but you know how the government works. That date will probably be pushed back.

There is some rumor here that they may take the Level II requirement out of the posting. I will let you know.

I saw them down a FLETC when I was there last year. They spend 5 weeks at FLETC and then 3-4 weeks training at their specific assignment. Our K-9 officer here started in BOP and then transferred to the Park Service.

Only problem is that you do not increase in the GS scale very fast. They start out at GS 5 and max out at a GS 7 (journeyman). To qualify for a GS 6 you need to have some grad time. It is right on their websitehttp://www.bop.gov/jobs/job_descript...al_officer.jsp)

I'll look into it, thanks.

BOP? You ever tried to apply to that place? You almost need a PHD in astrophysics to figure that out.

What is the Difference Between the Protection Rangers (which wear regular NPS Uniforms, Carry Sigs, Drive "Ranger" Police Cars with Blue lights). and the US Park Police? (Which wear Different Uniforms) and from what I can see the US Park Police are geared more towards pure LE. The Protection Rangers seem to be more Security and park ranger like, with the powers of arrest.

Both the Protection Rangers and US Park Police are bonafide LEOs. Except that the Park Police seem to be mostly based around the DC area and San Fransisco (Alcatraz, Gateway, etc.) and NYC.

You are pretty close. The US Park Police were originally establish to work in Washington DC and over their 120 year existence that have branch out to San Fran. and NY (Statue of Liberty). They are a much more professionalized law enforcement entity than the US Park Rangers. They have SWAT, K-9s, Counter-Intelligence, Mounted Units, Motorcycle division, Aviation Division, and so on. If you have every seen or been to a demonstrations or protests in DC, you will see them. They are the premier LE in DC. Check out their site: http://www.nps.gov/uspp/

Both the US Park Rangers and US Park Police fall under the National Park Service. Every year we hear rumors that the US Park Police will be taking over the LE in Boston but I think that all falls short due to $$.

It is a strange situation in the National Park Service. We both go to FLETC and are both in the same class there, but we are two very different divisions with different mission statements and different uniforms, but do the same job.

The US Park Ranger originally began in the larger western National Parks in order to protect and preserve the national resources. Over the year the Park service has expanded to historical sites (which is Boston), recreational areas and memorial site. In Boston our job is about 15% security and 85% directed law enforcment. We get our fair share of DUIs, drugs, A&Bs, B&Es, larceny and so on. But we also at times need to make sure buildings are locked, alarms are set and the US Navy is protected. We just do our job as US Park Rangers with far less officers than the US Park Police would.

If you ever look at the assault rates for federal law enforcement agencies, you will see that the US Park Rangers have been at the top of that list over the last 5 years. I think this is partly because of the way we look and how society see us. We are suppose to friendly and helpful and nice. You do not see the US Park Police getting assault as fast as we are.

Hopefully this helps.

Some Park Ranger positions are listed as Park Ranger(Protection) while other are listed as Park Ranger(Law Enforcement). They both appear to be the same job or very similar. What is the differnce between them?

There is no difference between the two listings, they are the same position. It is all how the park's hiring official enters it with OPM (office of personel management) and OPM posts it on usajobs.

There are 390 units(parks) in the National Park System. Every US Park Ranger job maybe have a slightly different job description. Here is Boston, the only talk I give to people begins with "You have the right to remain silent" and my tours consist of the booking and holding facilities.
