The man arrested on suspicion of killing California Highway Patrol Officer Earl Scott has spoken exclusively with KCRA 3 from jail.

Columbus Allen II, 30, spoke with KCRA 3 by phone from the Stanislaus County Jail in Modesto, insisting it was not him who killed the CHP officer during a traffic stop along Highway 99 early Friday.

When asked directly if he had anything to do with Scott's death, Allen said, "No, I had nothing to do with it. I wouldn't kill a cop."

Allen said he went to the Stockton Police Department Friday morning because his wife's car had been stolen. When asked who was behind the wheel of that car when it was pulled over by Scott, Allen said, "I don't know. All I know is that it was not me."

Allen's wife, Bertera, vouched for him, saying, "He's a good husband, he's a good father. He's not capable of doing something like this."

Meanwhile, Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department officials said they're confident Allen is the one responsible for the shooting and said they will continue to work to prove it.

Also Monday, KCRA 3 spoke with another may who may be connected to the crime.

Christopher Hicks, of Stockton, was arrested on Friday. Authorities said Hicks gave Allen a ride following the shooting.

When Allen to the door of Hicks' home just before 7 a.m. Friday, Hicks said he was sleeping and that his son woke him up to say Allen was at the door.

"I mean, he just seemed like he was normal when I came downstairs. I just asked him what was going on. He just told me his car got stolen," Hicks said.

Hicks said he'd met Allen about three years ago and that he'd considered helping Allen get into the rap music business by producing an album in Hicks' home recording studio. He said when Allen came to his door, he had no idea about the shooting that had taken place in Salida a few hours earlier.

Hicks said he dropped Allen off at a nearby gas station and then headed to the Oakland Airport to catch a flight to the NBA All-Star Game in Houston. Instead, police stopped Hicks at the airport and placed him under arrest.

"My sister from Las Vegas was calling me, telling how she's seen me on CNN," Hicks said.

Hicks was arrested on drug and weapons charges unrelated to Scott's killing. He posted bail and left jail Saturday night.

Investigators are now calling Hicks a material witness, not a suspect.
