Woman swims to safety after driving car into Dorchester Bay

By Mac Daniel, Globe Staff | February 21, 2006

A woman escaped from the frigid waters of Dorchester Bay this afternoon after she missed a turn in her speeding car and flew into the water near the University of Massachusetts at Boston campus. State police divers were searching near the vehicle to make sure no one else was trapped inside.

Witnesses said the woman, who escaped the car on her own and partially swam to shore as a student and UMass police officer swam to help her, was driving at a high rate of speed before the accident, so fast that her car flew airborne more than 30 yards before landing in the water. The condition of the unidentified woman, student, and officers were unknown after all three were transported to local hospitals.

One witness, Gina Bertolo, 13, of Hanson, was driving with her friend's mother on University Drive when the woman passed her at 100 miles per hour, she said. The woman appeared to have escaped after rolling down the window of her car after entering the water, she said.
