Roofers Claimed They Found Stash Of Money

POSTED: 1:27 pm EST February 17, 2006

LAWRENCE, Mass. -- A judge in Lawrence has thrown out charges against four men who were arrested after allegedly lying about the origins of "buried treasure."

Three of the men were roofers who were working on an old barn in Newbury last April when they came upon a stash of antique money worth thousands of dollars.

They initially claimed to have dug up the bills in the backyard of another man's home -- a story that got them on national TV -- but later got them in trouble when police figured out the truth.

Barry Billcliff and Tim Crebase were charged with larceny. Kevin Kozak and Matthew Ingham were charged with receiving stolen property.

Defense lawyers argued that the charges should be dismissed because the money was essentially abandoned property that no one knew was hidden in the barn.

A spokesman for the Essex County District Attorney said prosecutors are reviewing Friday's ruling by Judge Thomas Brennan to see if it can be appealed.
