The first Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty was laid to rest on Thursday.

Officer Eric Solorio, 26, died on Sunday after suffering severe spinal injuries in a patrol car crash while in the line of duty last month, NBC5's Lisa Tutman reported.

"I think you just have to go home to your family at night and hug them a little tighter and keep that in the back of your mind that every day you go out there, it could be you," said Officer David Nawrokki.

As a member of a special task force that targeted gangs, Soloario was an elite member of the force. Superintendent Phil Cline said Solario was a model officer.

"Even though he only had a short career of 3½ years, he made a difference and I think that was the theme of today's mass -- that in 3½ years this young man made a difference and that he was a role model for kids in this neighborhood and across the city," he said.

Solorio considered pursuing a medical career or the priesthood, but settled on a law enforcement career instead.

"Eric was just a very special person," said Cmdr. Edward O'Donnell of the Chicago Police Department. "He was full of energy and always had a smile on his face and he'd always tell a joke. He was a great cop. He loved working the streets -- he grew up in the Back of the Yards and just really cared about people all of his life."
