NEW ORLEANS (AP) — With two cruise ships housing hundreds of New Orleans police and firefighters due to sail away in less than two weeks, the Federal Emergency Management Agency says their needs will be met with either travel trailers or personal housing arrangements.
But the New Orleans Police Foundation says housing first-response officers is developing into a crisis that could affect the long-term safety of the city.
Police Superintendent Warren Riley said Wednesday that FEMA trailers, which provide about 250 square feet of space, will be inadequate for the workers — and could result in many officers taking positions with other departments.
FEMA spokesman Jack Brandais said the agency has "been working for a month to relocate folks after the ships leave.
"We're confident everybody is going to have an option of either their own living arrangements or a FEMA trailer, whatever they choose," he said.
But Brandais said the agency could not promise mobile homes that Riley and the Police Foundation say many officers need until long-term solutions can be found.
Riley said Wednesday that if adequate living arrangements are not made for those officers soon, they may decide to leave the New Orleans Police Department. He said other departments are actively recruiting New Orleans officers.
About 200 officers already have left the force through terminations, resignations and retirements since Katrina.
Police foundation director Bob Stellingworth said the foundation plans to use $1.5 million provided by Shell Oil Co. as a springboard to raise as much as $3 million to $4 million to help address the long-term needs of the officers.
