When to inquire about hiring status?

Hello everyone, I was hoping you all could give me some opinions on my current situation. I had a talk with a Sgt. from a local police department concerning their Auxiliary Police program. He was a real nice guy, and gave me a lot of information. Unfortunately, you need to be 21, as they carry a firearm on duty. I won't be turning 21 til this time next year, however he did tell me that they would send me to the R/I academy while I'm waiting to turn 21. I filled out an application I believe on Jan. 2nd, and was told they would run everything and give me a call. I was just wondering if, considering it's been almost a month and a half, I should give them a call and inquire about my status. I would also like to let them know that I would be willing to volunteer to do anything possible at the department, so I can become familiar with the department and the officers before I could be hired. I just do not want to sound like a pain, but also do not want them to think that I am not that interested. Thank you for any opinions you all may have!

You know I was in your same shoes out of high, school no age limit then. I didn't know what to do call or not call I didn't want to sound like a pest, even though they said they would call me back. I then called 3 months later and the Lt. thought I had lost interest because I didn't inquire....... So there you go.

Your paperwork is probably in the bottom drawer of the sergeant's desk. I think it's very reasonable to check up with him a month and a half later.

Definitely call and inquire. Politely ask if you were able to get into a R/I class and express interest in volunteering or doing ride alongs. You're not a pain until you call a few times a week. The Sgt. probably has a lot of other things going on, and you're not a priority. In my experience, I have always had to call.

If it's civil service, join the Air Force or Coast Guard now, get your veteran's status, and then you are pretty much guaranteed a job. You only need to score a 70, and will be above a non-vet with a 100. Massachusetts gives a huge advantage to veterans (30 points!). I think Massachusetts is the only state that gives veterans 30 points. Most others (states) might give a couple of points. Good luck.
