A Fort Morgan teenager is being held without bond after a high-powered rifle was fired at a school bus that was taking kindergarteners to class Monday morning.

A bullet went through three bus seats and lodged in the fourth seat, the Fort Morgan Police Department said.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Michael Cummings, 19, was arrested on suspicion of reckless discharge of a firearm. A high-powered rifle with a scope -- believed to be used in the shooting -- was recovered during the investigation.

Investigators say they're not convinced that the shooting was an accident. They believe Cummings may have aimed at the bus full of children deliberately.

The bus driver told officers she had heard something strike the bus while on her route but did not see what it was. After she parked the bus at the bus garage, she found an apparent bullet hole in the back of the school bus along with holes in seats.

Police reviewed surveillance video on the bus and learned that it had been shot at as the bus was going westbound in the 20000 block of Road Q.

Investigators then determined the approximate area the shot was fired from and heard from a witness who heard a gunshot in that area at the same time -- around 11:46 a.m.

Police tracked the shooting to Cummings, who was arrested Monday night.

"This incident was extremely fortunate in that no little ones were sitting in the rear seats of the bus as the round fully penetrated three seats before lodging in a fourth. I have no doubt we would have had deaths or at least life threatening injuries had kids been sitting in those seats," said Fort Morgan Sheriff Jim Crone.
