I'm in the academy now and all they keep saying is they need bodies. I believe they said they are already discussing another academy class after this one with around 100 recruits.

Mysty,

Currently the DOC is down about 450-500 officers. They have been actively recruiting over the past few years to try to make up the shortfall. They have not been able to keep up with people leaving the department, promotions, and the tremedous amount of retirees over the past few years, and know there are a lot more to come in the future. The amount of people in the department that are able to retire is unbelievable, and a lot of them are taking advantage of it because of the Corrections reform that has been taking place. To answer your question without going off track, the previous poster is about correct. The department over the past few academy classes have tried to hire 100-150 for each class. Keep in mind, even though a few thousand people take the test, there are a lot of people that change their minds, don't pass physical standards, background investigations, drug tests, or quit soon after the academy starts. The last few exams the department had to go down as far as the low-mid 70's to get enough people for the academy size they wanted (100), and still fell a few short due to people dropping out after the start of the class. Keep in mind 70 is a passing score, and the test really is not that difficult. They basically have been accepting anyone that can pass the written exam and pass the standards I have mentioned above. So start running, stay drug free, staighten out anything that might be in your background that could raise any flags (court issues, speeding tickets, outstanding parking tickets, etc) and make sure you are in shape. If you want this job, its for the taking, its a great time to take the exam if you have been thinking about a career. Any other questions, feel free to write.
