The Hulk is a Deputy

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The Incredible Hulk is now a county sheriff's department reserve deputy.

Lou Ferrigno, 54, who played the green-skinned monster on the CBS-TV show from 1977 to 1982, was sworn in during a ceremony Monday night.

"My father was a police officer with the New York Police Department; I've always had a high respect for officers," Ferrigno told The Associated Press. "I want to give back to the community, and I want to work with young kids, help them get off drugs."

Ferrigno began training to become a reserve deputy last September after passing a background check. He completed training in firearms, first aid, and high-speed driving techniques and was recognized as "an outstanding trainee" by Sheriff Lee Baca.

Ferrigno will serve at least 20 hours a month, help recruit new deputies and work with the sheriff's Youth Activities League and the Special Victims Bureau, which assists abused children.

Ferrigno was a bodybuilder before he starred on the TV show. The late actor Bill Bixby played mild-mannered scientist David Bruce Banner who, as Ferrigno, turned into a Herculean, green-skinned monster whenever he lost his temper. He switched back to Bixby's character as soon as he calmed down.

In recent years, Ferrigno has appeared as himself on the CBS sitcom "The King of Queens."

I can picture it now! "Excuse me sir, But this zone is clearly posted as a no parking zone" "#$*% off I'm a taxpayer!" que the Hulk theme!

If I recall correctly, he is very seriously hearing impaired. Wouldn't that prevent one from becoming a deputy? Also, he's 54. Isn't there an age limit? Now I'm curious. Are the responsbilities of a reserve deputy different from regular deputies?

Looking at the faces of those next to him...I'm betting that reserve duputy is like a special or something...no real requirement save a little training and showing up for detail work.

Also I think his hear has been improved by surgery, not that I think it matters in this case, just saying.

I would think that they are very different being a volunteer position.

I'm pretty sure it depends on the county. There are three levels of Reserve Peace Officer.

Level III Penal Code sections 830.6(a)(1) and 832.6(a)(2)
Level III reserve officers may perform specified limited support duties, and other duties that are not likely to result in physical arrests, while supervised in the accessible vicinity by a Level I reserve officer or a full-time regular officer. Additionally, Level III reserve officers may transport prisoners without immediate supervision.

Level II Penal Code sections 830.6(a)(1) and 832.6(a)(2)
Level II reserve officers may perform general law enforcement assignments while under the immediate supervision of a peace officer who has completed the Regular Basic Course. These officers may also work assignments authorized for Level III reserve officers without immediate supervision.

Level I Penal Code sections 830.6(a)(1) and 832.6(a)(1)
Level I reserve officers may work alone and perform the same duties as full-time regular officers.

Reserve peace officers are required by Commission Regulation 1007(a) (doc) to meet the same selection standards (e.g. personal history investigation and medical and psychological screening) as full-time regular officers. Commission Regulation1007(b) (doc) outlines the minimum training requirements for reserve peace officers.

The Legislature has established three levels of reserve peace officer to provide flexibility to law enforcement agencies. The duties of the different levels of reserve officer are described below:

yeah i watched the pumping iron documentry and he is deaf in his left and reads lips.

It looks like a PR placement to me (nothing wrong with that!)...He is hard of hearing (as opposed to deaf)...I had the opportunity to meet him in his "hay-day" when I worked at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at RIT. He could communicate without sign language.

A good move by the sheriff...DARE, etc..."The Hulk sez drugs are for cowards...".

I know that in other states, reserve officers go through the same exact training with fulltime officers including Field Training and in-service. They volunteer 12 hours a month, work special events, most never get paid assignments. Their responsibilites are the same when they work, and they do work patrol. Also, there is no special, reserve, auxiliary tabs or different patches on there uniforms that identifes them as such. Not sure about Cali, though. Regardless of the responsibilities of a "reserve deputy", I don't think that they will "set-up" the Hulkster for failure...His is a PR/Recruitment/DARE roll...if he does go on patrol, it will be with a senior deputy...and who's to say that because of his limited auditory function, his enhanced visual acuity might see something "normal" cops might miss?

Posted by: SOT

Enhanced visual acuity? Screw that!
when he busts outta that uniform and goes green, then the criminals are gonna run! That's what they are after!

Hulk no take stuff from criminals! HULK SMASH!
